D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Both were factors. Oversimplifying is a common mistake. The real world is messy.
do you think a simpler game would still have lost players to WoW? I do, so to me the primary reason for the loss of players imo is WoW (and the general drop in sales D&D always experienced)

I don’t agree. They got the game off the ground from nothing - largely without relevant training. I think they did well to get as far as they did before running into problems.
and I think they could have gotten much farther with better management. That they got anywhere at all was due to D&D becoming this popular on its own, not due to TSR’s management prowess. The game was good enough that even TSR could not kill it

You lose some players, pick up a different group of players, those looking for a social activity. You can’t compete with WoW by trying to be WoW.

Anyone can get further by being better, no matter how good you are to begin with.
D&D becoming this popular on its own
It certainly didn’t become popular on it own! How do you think people found out about it? Magic?

Devil Worship. Early on D&D was spread through satanic cults as a means to convert adolescents, until eventually it started taking off with the general populace and the cults lost control.

D&D and Hard Rock both gained popularity from the devil. I heard that if you read the 1E PHB backwards it you could even hear the coded satanic messages.

You are simply wrong. Without mega corporation money D&D would be a tiny minority interest as it was in TSR days.

But it doesn’t need YOU to support it. You are irrelevant. It needs a steady influx of NEW players, as do all the smaller businesses that hang onto WotC’s coat tails.
I liked the TSR days. The '90s had a much better balance of games played and supported than today, where it's 95% whatever WotC's making, 5% literally everything else.

The 1e PHB is hard to read forward; so I should give backwards a try. 🤔
