[D&D 5E] Securing the Alliance: An Adventure in Tethyr (IC)

"Guest? This word has more meanings, yes? You meaning," Gnorth holds up one finger " patrons of taverns or," Gnorth holds up a second finger, "new to town?" Gnorth then took a hearty swig of the ale. A good one,he thought to himself, probably survived by being so....stout. Gnorth chuckled out loud.

Lorenzo frowns slightly at the description of the attack not just on the buildings but on the guests, and the impact on the town guard as well. His customary unflappable nature is tested by the implications of the human casualties, and he shakes his head as if to clear it.

"That is dark news indeed, I am not sure what to say. The guards did mention that inn space would be at a premium, and that would certainly explain it. I don't suppose you still have rooms to let?", he looks around at the rubble doubtfully. "We don't mind a little mess, and could possibly help put the place to rights."

OOC: Checking time frame. The attack on Brue happened a week ago according to Rowena. Plus travel time of a day. Then the ogre attack was 'less than a tenday ago'. I.e. more or less at exactly the same time as Brue was attacked? Or with enough time for someone to have come from Mosstone with the items?

Also, do I know who Haedirn is or might be?

Devlin nodded to Gnorth, "Pretty much both terms. Aside from the guardsmen who were killed and dragged off, most of the rest were visitors to the Port. Most of them..."

The bartender pointed to a hallway to the left. The party could see the inside of one room given that the wall between it and the main room was smashed apart. Beyond that, they could see the insides of even more rooms, as if an ogre-sized boulder had smashed through the rooms in succession. "The rooms at ground level are, uh, out of order. I have a pair of rooms upstairs that are still workable. I can't provide meals though... the ogres took Nelly in the attack and I haven't been able to hire another cook yet."

OOC: They're all being pretty loose with the timing; it's just the way people are when keeping track of time and exact days isn't that important. If you ask specifically, let's see... you'll find that the time frame of Brue's attack and the ogre attacks means that her attackers, if they headed to Port Kir, would have arrived here the night before the ogre attack, assuming they didn't stop anywhere along the way.

To see if any of you already know anything about Haedirn, please roll a DC20 Intelligence (Arcana) Check

Lorenzo blinks slightly at the man's tale.

"Nelly was 'taken'? My apologies for being blunt, but do you mean 'taken from us'? Or were the ogres actually ... taking people?"

Devlin sighed. "Well, both I guess. Killing and taking, as far as I saw. At least, I hope the poor souls were killed before the ogres left town with their bodies."

OOC: Feel free to roll an Intelligence (History) Check for esoteric information on ogres.

Lorenzo bows his head in a brief prayer following Devlin's hope regarding the ogres' victims.

"Lady, smile over those poor souls, and all those who remain."

After a moment he looks up again at the tavernkeeper, and slides a couple of silver across the bar for the drinks, then lays a gold upon the wood and smiles slightly.

"Well, I guess it's time to be straight with you, my good sir. We didn't come here just for the ale." He pauses to take a sip. "It is good, though... or the rooms. We were supposed to meeting someone here. They would have arrived just about eight or nine days ago, and asked specifically for the Harbor room. I don't suppose you remember if such a person was here? Or what became of them?"

OOC: Using the prayer as an opportunity to cast guidance

Brue listened to the back and forth, sipping her water. When a lull in the conversation presented itself, she turned to Devlin. "There are five of us, but we can shoehorn into two rooms. I don't mind to take the floor; I'd be grateful simply for a roof over my head for the evening. We'll find our own way to meals." She dug for some coin, and discreetly handed six gold to Devlin, palming it so the others couldn't see. "For the rebuilding. And your silence."

Devlin had started to reach across the table to gather up the coins appreciatively when his hand stopped at Lorenzo's words. In a very neutral tone, with notes of confusion, the bartender replied, "Did I hear you right? You said you're friends with the people who asked for the harbor room about a tenday ago?"

OOC: Lorenzo, Brue, and Boddynock immediately pick up that the bartender just shifted from friendly to wary based on what Lorenzo asked. If anyone who is not named Lorenzo would like to attempt a Persuasion check, please feel free.

"Friend can be strong word," Gnorth smiled between sips, oblivious to the change in attitude,"at this point we just were supposed to have a talk. Any information would be appreciate."

OOC: [roll0]

Boddynock was once again lost in his thoughts, this time over the conversation regarding Haedirn. The man's name was definitely familiar, and he smiled at remembering the dealings his father had with him. Most of his childhood memories were decent ones...except when they involved his "incident" in his father's lab. Boy, was his father mad about that. Thankfully, the guild was able to step in and give him a way to redeem himself. And it was when he was thinking about his guild master when the outside world barged in again, the mention of the Harbor Room bringing him quickly back from his dream-world.

Ooooh.....

He shot an agitated look at Lorenzo; he didn't realize that the group was quite ready to be asking about yet, what with them just arriving. He had also thought that he was going to be impersonating Vials slightly, and his new friends were threatening to blow that up before they could even get started. He wanted to speak up, to help set the mood right, but Gnorth seemed to be taking care of that just fine. He picked up his tankard and drained it slowly, hoping the current situation would calm down before they had to force it to calm down.

OOC: I was going to see about helping out with the Persuasion; per the book, you can use a group task or give help, but it seems like Gnorth's got this!
