[D&D 5E] Securing the Alliance: An Adventure in Tethyr (IC)

Brue looked at Devlin. "You said many of your rooms have been smashed. Did the three men take rooms other than the Harbor Room? If so, and if their rooms are accessible, could we take a look there, as well?"

OOC: I was thinking the Harbor Room was a conference room or a meeting room in a quiet part of the inn, and that the men rented sleeping rooms. Re-reading the thread, it doesn't sound like that's the case. I'll leave Brue's question to stand, however. Just in case.

Devlin shook his head, "No, they were staying in the Harbor Room. It's the largest room on the ground floor and... well, it overlooked the Harbor."

"Me like the naming convention, simple and to the point. Whiskey." Gnorth holds out his flask, thankful for the reminder from Corilo, so absorbed Gnorth was in his barseat, which had not only a cushion but also a slight wobble, that he had almost forgotten about his flask. Gnorth considered shattering the thing, but the Secretary's stern face entered his mind and he immediately squashed that though. Instead, he stood up. "Let's have a look, shall we?"

Brue walked back to the last room on the left and watched Corilo and Lorenzo check over the room. She let her keen eyes roam the rubble, hoping to spot a clue. After half a minute of looking, she stepped past the doorway into the room, careful not to dislodge any broken ceiling beams or support structures that, if disturbed, could fall on and injure someone. She looked inside the room's furnishing's drawers, under whatever was left of the bed, between the mattress layers, and generally started going through any remaining personal effects.

OOC: Not sure whether you want [roll0] or [roll1].

Boddynock nodded his head at the bartender, thankful for their being allowed to check out the Harbor room. The bartender really had no good reason to let them do so, but there was a saying about catching flies with honey as opposed to vinegar; it seemed the kind words they had laid out to the man had gone a long way.

He stood up and followed Brue to the room, not because he didn't want to be in front, but because his short legs wouldn't allow him to keep up with the long strides of the warrior-woman. He was definitely glad that she was on his side; what she had done in that battle with the Gnolls had gotten his attention, and he was going to make sure to keep her on his side of the fence.

And it never hurts to have someone skilled with a blade protecting your backside...

Upon entering the room, he quickly scanned the contents, his eyes gazing over everything that was in immediate sight. But immediate sight would not do; there was always the possibility of something else being there that couldn't be seen.

"Deprehendere magicae!"

OOC: Casting Detect Magic on the room and its contents.

Duration 10 Min (Concentration)

For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.

The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.

Needless to say, I am moving about the room and moving stuff as I work on doing this. And, because I'm a wild surge kind of guy...

Surge Check: [roll0]
Surge Result: [roll]1d100][/roll]

EDIT: Well, botched the d100 roll. Doesn't matter; surge only happens on a 1 on that d20.

The party made their way back through the shattered remnants of the inn, at times ducking or clambering over broken wood. Arriving at what was once the Harbor Room, the Shadow Stars started their examination.

What was once the far left wall was for essentially gone, the room now open to the harbor with water lapping a short distance below the edge. Wooden groaning sounds could be heard all around, even above and below, as the wooden beams and pilings did their best to accommodate the sudden weight that had been introduced. It was Brue who spotted a tattered and stained swatch of purple cloth tied outside what was left of the left wall. Boddynock's incantation only revealed the ring that Brue carried as bearing an aura of abjuration.

Brue walked over to the outside of the left wall and had a look at the purple cloth swatch. She took a few seconds to examine it carefully, categorizing how it was tied, whether it appeared to have been purposefully left behind or snagged off someone's or something's garments, and whether the cloth might serve as a means to hail an interested observer. When she was satisfied that she'd gleaned all she could from observation, she untied the cloth and examined it further, taking it over to the others. "There's this, she offered. "Looks like the purple sash described to us as a means to signal."

Boddynock took note that the only thing magical in the room and immediate area was the ring on Brue's finger, scratching his head a couple of times.

"Very interesting. If this...Vials, did you call him?...was here, he left no magical traces of his being so. And whoever took him did the same. Mayhap the only clue left remaining of what happened is this purple cloth you've found, Brue."

Lorenzo shakes his head ruefully.

"Well that sinks it then. One purple flag. Zero stolen items. Looks like we need to go ogre hunting."

Corilo couldn't suppress a laugh "C'mon, was anyone really expecting to find our target here? That would've been far too lucky."

He quickly regained his composure "Looks like we gotta do this the hard way. Besides, those ogres deserve some payback from what they've done here, right?".
