D&D 5E [D&D 5E] Tattered Memories: An Adventure in Tethyr (COMPLETE)

[section]Brue picked up the steel band. Her eyebrows raised in curiosity. A murmured exclamation escaped. "O-ho! What's this?" She inspected the steel band for markings but couldn't see much in the darkened room. She felt her stomach squeeze in excitement at the find, and quickly set about gathering up all twelve of the rings. She'd put them in a pocket if she had one. If not, she put her arm through the circles and would carry home all twelve that way.

Brue toed the ashes of the firepit once more. When she was satisfied she had all the steel bands and that nothing else of interest remained behind, she closed the window shutters and exited the shanty, pulling the door closed behind herself. Back outside, Brue blinked into the darkness and tried to get her bearings. She set off for the Temple of Waukeen, intent on regaining her room.[/section]

Inspecting the bands, Brue could see that they were a bit battered. Through use or manufacture, however, she could not say. The bands were otherwise unremarkable. Gathering her find, the genasi slipped the rings into a pouch at her belt and exited the house, carefully closing the door behind her.

Taking an alternate route back, the woman slipped through the alleyways and sidestreets that branched off of the Main and the Trade Way. She arrived back at Commerce House shortly and slipped inside. The temple was quiet, Coinmaster Cooper likely sound asleep.

[section]Brue trod as quietly as she could inside the commerce house. She made her way back to her room and quietly shut her door. She put the pouch with the rings on the bed, then lit the lantern in her room and drew up a chair beside the bed. She took the rings out one by one, examining them with care. She looked for inscriptions, runes, or markings. She bit the metal, tasted it, tried to see what it was. Once she was satisfied that the rings would tell her no more this night, she parceled them away in her pouch and tucked the pouch under the bunk.

Brue stretched out on the bed, tired. Her head still hurt from the thump she'd received. And she still felt sorely the lack of a bath. "In the morning, mayhap. And p'haps Master Boddynock will know about these bands." She fell asleep.[/section]

OOC: If nothing untoward occurs in the night, Brue will see whether Tolliver requires anything of her in the morning, then will set out to find Boddynock.

Brue awoke early as dim light filtered through the wooden shutters of the room's sole window. Rising, the genasi secured her gear and exited to the main temple. Coinmaster Cooper, however, was nowhere to be found, unless he was in his personal chambers. Thinking better of possibly disturbing his sleep, Brue decided to head out to Boddynock's house. The stroll north along the Trade Route was mostly empty. She passed a few villagers along the route, but most averted their gazes and tugged on their bandannas to insure they were in place.

Arriving at Boddynock's stone house, Brue knocked on the door and waited. After waiting a minute, there was no answer.

[section]Brue knocked again, but this time didn't wait for a response. She tried the door, hoping it would open. "Master Boddynock?" She looked around for signs of the gnome, then belatedly remembered to pull up her bandana to cover her nose.[/section]

Again, there was no response from inside. Pushing on the door, Brue noted that it was barred on the inside.

OOC: Make a Perception (Wisdom) check, with advantage

As Brue moved to pull up her bandanna, a charred smell reached her nose. Glancing to her right, she noted smoke rising from the charnel pit. Stepping towards the edge of the pit, the genasi saw a large dark heap at the bottom; there was little doubt the head was the consolidated, burned remains of a good number of people. The stench of charred flesh hit her nose more strongly as she leaned in for a closer look. Fortunately, Brue's inhuman constitution kept her from vomiting.

Considering the scene, the woman guessed that the gnome had likely worked through the night and was probably sound asleep. The bands of metal clinked together in her pouch.

[section]Brue stood at the lip of the pit, considering. She'd been past this pit once or twice now but never paid it much heed because it was revolting. A large part of her was loathe to undertake what she was about to do. She tightened the bandana about her face, making sure it was securely tied, then clambered down into the pit to investigate. The dead were best left alone, and Brue felt a rising sense of impropriety well up in her gut. She made herself keep going.[/section]
OOC: Let me know if you need a Strength check for Brue to climb down, or an Investigate check to check out the pit. Here's hoping her boots don't melt in any embers that might still be glowing. And may I just say...YUCK YUCKITY YUCK.
