D&D 5E [D&D 5E] Tattered Memories: An Adventure in Tethyr (COMPLETE)

The man stiffened, spotting Brue as she revealed herself. "Who... What!?!" he choked out as he scrambled backwards and out of sight. His retreat lasted only a second before he reappeared wielding a pike. "Morris, get over here! We've got a grave-robber! Claims to be a lawkeeper." Staring hard at Brue, he said, "Don't move or you're gettin' a yard of steel and wood."

A younger man, presumably Morris, appeared next to the first man. With a crossbow held to his shoulder, he peered down length of it at Brue. "I don't know what to make of this... should I shoot her, Old Pete?"

[section]Brue sighed again. She made no move, but yelled up, "I have a lawkeeper badge. Sir Greycastle deputized me. I am not grave robbing. I am investigating, which is what Greycastle ordered me to do. Please lower your weapons a hair. I'll climb out and show you what I found, if you don't mind?" [/section]

"I don't care who you claim to be or what you claim to be doing! All I see is someone robbing the remains of the dead, the diseased remains of the dead no less." Old Pete replied, spitting after the last. "Don't move from where you are, we'll let Greycastle sort this out. If you're what you claim to be, you shouldn't have anything to worry about."

Turning to Morris, Old Pete continued in a lower voice which Brue could still barely make out, "Keep her in your sights. If she moves anywhere close to the walls, shoot her. We'll let Greycastle sort this one out, although if he's bringing on people who are so quick to disturb the dead, maybe we need a new lawkeeper."

Old Pete moved away from the edge of the pit towards the south. Morris remained silent, training the crossbow squarely on Brue.

[section]Brue stood still. She made no move, but did not drop the fetid dead hand. A look at the ring's inscription was her goal, and damned if she would give up her prize unless or until Greycastle ordered otherwise. She cringed when she thought of his reaction to finding her in the pit, however. She fell to glowering up at Morris while Old Pete went to fetch her boss.[/section]

After standing in the pit for what felt like an hour, Brue heard more voices approaching. It wasn't long before Old Pete and Greycastle appeared at the edge of the pit. Greycastle audibly sighed when he took in the scene.

"What in the Gaze of Helm is going on here, Brue?"

Morris kept his crossbow trained on the woman.

[section]Brue looked up at Greycastle. She could tell he wasn't pleased. She didn't blame him. She wasn't, either. "I climbed down here to check on something after I knocked on Master Boddynock's door and he didn't answer. Some of the body parts hadn't made their way into the fire, so I walked the edge of the pit and nudged those in. That's when I saw this." She eyed Morris, daring him to shoot her. Then she held aloft the dead hand. "You wanted me to investigate, well, there's a ring on this hand that won't come off, and I think there might be an inscription on the inside of the band. I don't give a fig about the ring, except to see the inscription. I want to know whether the body is a half-elf. Might confirm a theory I have that only humans get sick." She lowered the disgusting dead hand. "I admit it wasn't my best decision. But I'd be grateful if no one shot me while I climbed out. I'd like you to look at the ring, if you don't mind."[/section]
