D&D 5E [D&D 5E] Tattered Memories: An Adventure in Tethyr (COMPLETE)

[section]Figuring Greycastle would find his own way in and not wanting to burn additional time, Brue crossed the room to the trap door and examined it without overtly touching it. The gnome had proven himself weasely; she didn't trust him not to trap the door. If she was satisfied that nothing obvious was amiss with the trap door, she took out her dagger and used the tip of the blade to pry open and lift the door.[/section]

Brue approached the trapdoor with caution. She examined the portal for any obvious signs of entrapment, but found nothing. Looking up, she searched the area around the trapdoor for any signs of devices that might be triggered if she were to open it. Seeing none, she stuck her dagger in the finger hole provided to lift the door and raised it.

She could definitely hear movement below and it sounded a bit frantic.

[section]Brue quietly closed the trap door, then quickly went outside and found Greycastle. She motioned for him to join her inside the cottage. "Looks like no one's in the cottage, but I got in the front door and found a trap door in the floor. Not sure what's down there quite yet, but there's definitely a ruckus going on wherever the hole leads to. Didn't want to go in without you."

Brue intoned a prayer for guidance, then went back inside the cottage and lifted the lid to the trap door with her bare hand. She sheathed her dagger but kept her greatsword handy. The genasi peered down into the open trap door, trying to discern how she might get down there, and what was in there.[/section]

As Brue turned to go find Greycastle, the paladin entered the front door. "Doesn't look like there's any kind of exit out back. What have you found?"

After explaining her discovery, Greycastle responded, "Let's go then."

The genasi lifted the trapdoor again. She could see wooden stairs leading down, but if there was any light down there, it wasn't much and she could see nothing beyond the immediate vicinity of the stairs. The ground appeared to be worked stone.

[section]Brue listened at the trap door for a beat, then threw caution to the wind and headed down. She kept on hand on the stairs to steady herself, and her other hand on her unsheathed blade. She readied her muscles to slash at a foe that might leap out at her.[/section]

OOC: Go down the stairs. Ready action: [roll0] for [roll1], Brue will attack if something jumps out at her or attacks her.

Shuffling down the stairs with Greycastle behind her, Brue entered a dark basement. To her south, a fireplace burned in what appeared to be the east wall of the room. It only gave off a paltry amount of light, but did illuminate a pair of corpses lying on the ground to the south. The genasi was pretty sure she saw more corpses further south, but the light was too dim to be sure.

To the southwest, she heard a muffled curse, a clank, and the sound of metal squealing against metal. "Pesky meddler!" Vials screamed from the darkness.

GM: Go ahead and roll Initiative

OOC: Map Notes:
White = Bright Light / Light Grey = Dim Light / Dark Grey = Darkness
Red Squares = Fireplace (If you are pushed into or end your turn, Dex Save or Fire Damage)
Brown Stripes = Stairs
Squiggles are corpses (Difficult Terrain)

Just as a reminder for resource tracking, Brue has full HP, one 1st Level Cleric spell slot still available (Bless or Cure Wounds), and Action Surge.

OOC: Brue has a readied action to attack Vials if she is attacked, and I'd like to keep that now, if that's possible before we start combat rounds (not sure). She'll move to J6 and examine the corpse. She hears Vials, but does she see him?

OOC: By my reading, you can't really Ready an Action outside of combat. That's sort of what the surprise determination is for, since it ties into reflexes, perception, etc. In this case, it won't really matter. Just for future consideration.

Vials Initiative [roll0]
Other Initiative [roll1]
Greycastle Initiative [roll2]

GM: Round 1
Vials: 00/??
Brue: 27/37
Other: 00/??
Greycastle: 28/28

Vials - Attack w/Advantage: [roll0], [roll1], [roll2]
Brue: Lit a Torch and Moved
Ugly Dog: Standing Ready
Greycastle: Moved and Standing Ready

Before Brue could react, a sickly green beam erupted from the darkness, striking her squarely in the chest. Where the beam hit, her skin broke out in diseased boils and weeping pustules. The pain was excruciating and accompanied by a sick feeling. Nearly vomiting, the genasi heard a strangely echoing growl coming from the same general vicinity as Vials' attack.

GM: Brue took 10 points of poison damage and must roll a DC 12 Constitution Check or be poisoned until the end of Vials' next turn. Brue can tell Vials is attacking from C7
