Maybe we can buy a can of 'Geekmusk 5e' from WoTC to top up our books if the stench weakens? If they don't provide this for sale then I say they have utterly failed us with this edition! I demand it! 5e's horrific smell is integral to the play experience lol :)

They smell like oily copy print to me; you know that gloss paper that everyone uses now a days. I like my page print from the olden days, they smell great and age well. But eventually they all smell like library - I keep all my editions side by side on my D&D shelves...
Which is great with the new 'one ring' edition, I mean 5th edition....

Hiya.

Hmm..I thought 4e had a milder scent with nutty overtones and a hint of jasmin...

C'mon folks...what are your favourite smelling roleplaying games?

:)

For me, I think the winner, hands down, is my Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play (1st Edition; 1986, hardback, printed in UK). After that, probably 1e AD&D books and my Powers & Perils boxed set(s). For recent game...I think it's probably the DCC RPG.

For the longest time we (me and my friends) could almost judge a game by how it smelled (crazy teenagers!). We'd go into the local hobby store, find a new RPG, crack it open and stuff our nose into the crack and breath in deeply. If it smelled "good", we bought it...if not...well, it went back on the shelf. :)

The smell of the 1E hard backs is the best, and (amazingly) still lingers after many years in hand and on shelf.

A quick sniff of 5E PHB: Light but well rounded, not a hint of bog but a touch of older box set ~ in short similar to 1E FR box set. It doesn't smell too different from my recently arrived copy of Dwimmermount, despite that being a B+W book.

Went and grabbed my FR box set, and yes it is similar - tho not as 'dusty' - smell is the most evocative and well remembered of the senses!

When I was pondering the smell of good smelling rpgs...Warhammer 1st, AD&D 1st and DCC were the exact same books that came to my mind too!

I think Warhammer would be the winner...just...but all three had fine bouquets. :)

Hold the phone! Stop the press! breaking news!

My copy of the DMG has arrived...and it smells...quite nice!

I have re-burried my nose into the books.

The PHB is the main culprit...it's rotten. The MM is quite sweaty too.

But in comparison...the DMG is like a sweet, sweet Autumn breeze. Ahhh :)
