This isn't a long essay by me, but I just saw an article that I wanted to share because it touches on something that I have referenced in some of my essays, albeit only in passing.

I recommend giving it a quick look. There have been a lot of prior studies (and anecdotal evidence) that D&D (and other RPGs) can be helpful in certain areas, from autism to general use as a therapeutic tool.
I think that there is a lot that can be said about the beneficial effects of RPGs, even if just the group social dynamics, but I want to emphasize that there is a huge difference between considered use of D&D as a therapeutic tool ... and just playing D&D. Please remember- playing D&D is fun, but it is not a substitute for actual mental health treatment.
