Now this is an interesting idea...interesting indeed...If they were going to do a non-animated film based on the original cartoon series, who should they cast in the different roles?

I'd like to see Wallace Shawn in the role of Dungeon Master.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders Vengar! The first is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well known is never go up against the Dungeon Master when death is on the line! HAHAHAHA ~ :erm:

That might not go over too well but would be a very funny actor choice since the best choice, Billy Barty, is gone, They is still Warwick Davis aka Willow Ufgood.

Come on, Snails was awesome.

The portrayal of Snails was clearly the result of the best Chris Tucker impression Marlon Wayans could muster...that's not saying much.

That merely means it was one of the lesser fatal flaws of that film.

Even only having watched it once in theaters- damn, but I wish I had that money & time back- I can still recall:

1) Damodar being "too sexy, too sexy" for his helmet.

2) Obviously plastic artifacts.

3) Jeremy Irons shouting more unintelligibly than the Darth Vader spoofer from "Hardware Wars." He's hammier than a Honeybaked Ham commercial.

4) CGI dragons moving impossibly fast for creatures that massive- visually faster than WW2 fighter planes of similar dimensions at similar range.

5) CGI crowds with obvious repeats.

6) Elves with a narrower emotive range than any Vulcan. Ever.

7) Tom Baker in an utterly throwaway role.

I loved the series as a kid, so I bought the boxed set a few months back and was aghast at how horrible it was. I mean, it was absolutely cringe worthy — I was unable to watch a single episode from beginning to end. That said, the first D&D move was equally horrible.

So. . . as an adult who has actually gone back and watched the series recently, I think that both the series and the film suck. I think that they both suck hard. As a kid, on the other hand, I suspect that I would have loved the first D&D film as much as I did the series.

Also, as somebody else mentioned, the second D&D movie (actually a pilot for an unaired Sci-Fi Channel series) was a hundred times better than the first film and, in my opinion, more watchable than the old animated series as well.

One thing that made the second movie in some regards worse was its beginning credits, it actually looked somewhat good for the beginning of the credits (even with the obvious Green Earth ram skull on the staff).

Well, I can't say nothing much on your collection:p.
It's a collection that includes Braveheart, Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, Judge Dredd, Ladyhawke, Mad Max, Stargate (original), and the Star Wars Trilogy on VHS as well as Hot Fuzz, Pan's Labyrinth, and Stardust on DVD.

How exactly has the awesomeness of The Gamers(1 and especially 2) not come to dominate this thread. True there no in the poll or the OP but come on . . .

I refuse to vote as the Gamers are not on it. To be fair I have avoided seeing the movie and dragonlance movie due to the numerous horrid reviews of it I've heard. Although I am seriously considering tracking down the second one.

I've recently seen a few episode of the cartoon and while I can see defending based on its time, and a 'meaningful, continuing storyline' . It is still painful to watch, even forgiving the quality of the animation.

Because they aren't licensed D&D media, nor specifically linked to D&D in any way? ;)

On the whole, I liked the movie better. The movie was terrible in so many places, but a large chunk of that was combining an inexperienced director with a SFX budget that went mostly missing. The cartoon show was ... well, fairly terrible as well. All things considered, I don't have a high opinion of either.

The cartoon was saddled with some Saturday morning cliches, but was basically very cool. I have the new DVD set.

The movie? Not quite Plan 9 From Outer Space territory, but getting close. It's good for a MST3K night with the gang.
