IIRC, dec 31 1969 is the default Amazon date for a book with no release date (yet). Its the lowest number in the database.

I think they use -1 as the date, which represents 23:59:59 on the 31st of December 1969 according to UNIX epoch.

I thought people were kidding when they mentioned this book, but I really can't believe it's come to this. That's kinda sad. I mean... the rules aren't THAT complicated, are they? And they've got the new Basic D&D coming out.

D&D is actually fairly daunting to a brand new player, character generation in particular. I have seen people give up on RPGs completely because they felt that the Player's Handbook read like stereo instructions, this is actually not a bad idea.

When introducing new players to RPGs in general I choose Storyteller, I can get them playing in half an hour.

The Auld Grump, who runs classes on RPGs and on Military Science at a summer program, gods I love that job... :)

They sure are! It's a huge culture shock to show most people a game with 1000 pages of rules. But 384 pages isn't much better.

The amazon page no longer says 1969 for me.

I'm actually looking forward to this book - most of the dummies books I've seen are well researched, writen by experts, and most of all useful to people with all levels of knowledge, skill, and interest.

Granted - I only own Massage for Dummies, but it's an excellent example of the above - it's a useful reference for everyone from people who just want to give a friend a back rub, people planning to go to massage school, practicing massage therapists who'd like a quick reference, or to people just looking to get a professional massage and have no idea what to look for or to ask for.

I think D&D for dummies could have a similar range...
