So playtest material is now canon?

We’re even going to use Dragon to show off new classes and races before they appear in a future Player’s Handbook, basically revealing them in playtest mode so that you can help us get them ready for wider distribution. That’s one of the perks of being a D&D Insider—you get to help shape the future development of the game.

Each online magazine includes material written by a combination of my in-house design and development staff, well-known freelancers, and talented newcomers from among the D&D fan base. That material is then subjected to the rigorous development process that all of our analog products go through, a process headed up by Mike Mearls and the D&D developers. When we reveal an article or an adventure, it stands side-by-side with our analog products as official, fully developed D&D canon.

Wow. WotC is going to be doing in public playtesting for upcoming classes and people harp on a bit of murky English. The playtest stuff is obviously not fully developed. But it is basically developed and designed to be canon and that is freaking cool.

Maybe, maybe not...

Interesting that they're getting the house-ruling in on the development process though. Points for effort, even if it doesn't work out as well as they/we hope.

The game table and character creator are what I want the most, so hopefully whatever issues are holding up the release of those two things gets resolved soon.

My harping was done in fun. Whats the point of the internet if we can't tear things apart. :)

What I came away with much more was that the character generator isn't ready. That seems the big news to me. Depending on the GSL that could be the most important thing as I will never do characters for any system by hand anymore.

Personally I'm not pleased with the price scheme of DDI (because I'm not interested in the digital tool at all). But I'm pleased that they offer a free period to peruse the online content. Maybe I will be impressed and decide its worth paying full price. I think it's a move in the right direction, thank you Wizards. This will help me in making a truly informed decision.

I hope the Character Builder is only the 3d "Mini-Figure" Application and the Character Sheet/Creator is still coming out on June 6 because a character generator really helps when you learn a new system (the CD that came with 3.0 was VERY helpful).
