IIRC, the Character Builder is the tool for creating the actual character stats and sheet, and the Character Visualizer is the tool for 3d modelling.

Personally I'm not pleased with the price scheme of DDI (because I'm not interested in the digital tool at all). But I'm pleased that they offer a free period to peruse the online content. Maybe I will be impressed and decide its worth paying full price. I think it's a move in the right direction, thank you Wizards. This will help me in making a truly informed decision.

Yeah - this may end up sucking me in. I'm completely non-interested in the digital tools for the most part - if I can't make a character with just pencil, paper and a handful of dice for a game, I've found that's an indication that I'm probably not going to enjoy that game very much - but I have become more and more interested in the "setting support" they keep talking about putting into the DDI. When they started saying that there were only going to be 3 books in a setting line and that the rest of the support would be in the DDI, that made me think that there might be something worth paying for in there after all.

We'll see - $15/month is still too much for me to afford at this point in my life. And the settings I care about (e.g. non-FR settings) probably won't be seeing much support during the public beta period.

That's probably true. I can see room for early Eberron support (it was promised that this would happen soon), but beyond FR and Eberron, there doesn't seem to be any really important settings supported by WotC.

Maybe you'll be in a more suitable point of life when the interesting supports comes out. ;)

Yes, the "client based applications" are going to be delayed. By months after their initially announced "beta" date.

Basically all this is saying is that will finally get serious about the magazines, in June.

Anyone else get the feeling from this that the game table won't be available from launch?
They explicitly stated that it won't be available at launch. Better to wait a few months than to get a bug-ridden application, though...

I like the idea of getting a month or two of free preview for the two e-zines and especially the rules compendium.

Well, if WotC had to copy anything from Blizzard/WoW, their "release when finished" approach to programing/development is really the best idea to pick.

Wow. WotC is going to be doing in public playtesting for upcoming classes and people harp on a bit of murky English. The playtest stuff is obviously not fully developed. But it is basically developed and designed to be canon and that is freaking cool.
All in fun. If you were to go back through my posts of the last 8-12 months, you'd find that I've been consistently positive about both the DDI and Dragon and Dungeon going digital.

I assume that playtest material will somehow be made clear as such. Maybe by being marked "preview".

That makes me a sad panda. I was looking forward to playing with some old buddies right after release. :(
