D&D Miniatures and Randomization

I actually enjoy the randomization for a couple of reasons.
1. I like being surprised, and opening the box of minis is always a surprise as to what you might get.
2. It gives me a reason to include some monsters in my game that I otherwise may never have included.

While granted it would be nice, especially for when I do play the minis side of the game, to have all the minis. It doesnt mean that the ones I do have are completely useless, even when they might be a dwarven werebear. (gonna have to get creative to use that one....)

This is what I've learned about the D&D minis:

If you know exactly what you want, then you're probably better off buying metal figures and painting them or finding stores that sell singles.

If you just want lots of miniatures to use in D&D, the randomization works out great. You get a broad range of figures and multiples of a lot of minis.

I definitely fall into the second category. I tend to look through my minis collection and design encounters to fit it. I like buying boosters of D&D minis and sorting out the figures I get. I don't think there's a single figure that I can't eventually get use out of.

Ditto. I have actually run a dungeon crawl designed around the minis I have. It's not often that the party gets attacked by abyssal maws, monstrous spiders and drow all in the same night.

An interesting side query: What monsters (or other types) would you like to see as commons?

Cheers!

Some fae would be nice. Perhaps a dryad or a grig. I would also like to see vermin swarms.

Norkers!

Between my D&D minis and my collection of metal figures, I think I can run The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun as one long, massive battle from start to finish. All I need is a bunch of norkers.

For those who don't own the module, the monsters in the dungeon are highly organized. They attack in waves, with monsters spilling from the upper levels and finally the lowest ones to overrun the party. I've been thinking of building a model of the temple and running the adventure as a weekend-long marathon for a while.

Mike: that would be very, very cool. I'm fortunate enough to own a copy of WG4, and that really sounds entertaining. :)

Cheers!

As far as #1 - do you like being "suprised" even when only get your n'th [insert mini name here]? I find myself becoming almost fatalistic about it "I really shouldn't buy another box because I'll get more of the same. But - *maybe* I'll get a box with the ones I still want. Sigh... another orc spear-fighter (that makes a total of 12 of 'em) but no Devis."

For me I love the werebear dwarf. Its pretty cool IMHO. The chitine and the Black Dragon are also nice. Generally I look for the rare first after I open a pack. But some of the commons can be nice- I like the orcs for instance.

Kerwyn and the abysmmal maw sux , I think. The maw is just molded and painted in an ugly way. Kerwyn's eyes look weird...

To digress, I generaaly like the bigger minis. The seem to have more detail(as can be expected) and are painted better. The centaur and Umber Hulk just rock.
