D&D, Miniatures, and you.

(How) are you using official D&D Minis

  • I use a battlemat with whatever is around.
  • Never bought D&D Miniatures, but want to try it.
  • Never played the skirmish game, don't intend to.
If I had more disposable income, and a ready source of cheap specific figures like you lucky bastards in the United States do, I'd probably collect D&D miniatures for use in my games. The skirmish game doesn't really interest me, though I've played and enjoyed Star Wars Miniatures.

We have skirmished a few times but mainly play Heroscape for that aspect.
I now use only plasticrack for gaming. If I don't have the correct mini I use a close substitute. I have put all my stand in coins back into the coin jar ;)
I am also a completionist. I have all the minis Wizard's has made except for 5 from Blood Wars.

I use a battlemat and whatever is around (counters, numbered poker chips, some metal minis provided by a player). I never bought the D&D minis (I did get a freebie set, and I did buy a set as a gift for a kid and held back a couple of the scarier ones, and these few plastic minis I have count as "whatever is around" sometimes). I never played the skirmish game, nor do I want to.

If the packages weren't randomized and I had a clear idea of what I was getting in a particular set, I might consider purchasing.

I have been buying and using them since Harbinger was released. I have compllete sets of the first several sets, but Underdark was the first I doid not complete, and have not completed any set since. I have over/close to 3000 and use them as well as metal minis when we play. I skirmished occasinally through the releae of Giants of Legend, and won a league I was in at the LGS, but haven't skirmished since Aberrations was released. I usually buy a single case and some singles at the LGS and then trade for the rest that I want now. Up through GOL I bought 2-3 cases of each set, but haven't bought more than 1 since Abeerrations and never even got a case of War Drums. I am undecided still if I will get a case of Unhallowed or not. The revelation of the set at D&DXP was a bit disappointing to me.

I'm one of those ones who hates the random packaging marketing thing so I've never bought and don't intend to. I'd rather spend that money on books and beer rather than on tons of extra minis I don't want.

I do find it interesting that you used the word "old" in your list to describe metal minis. Does that imply that metal minis are already out of date? Maybe its time for me to pack up and go to the old gamers home where we can rant about better times and how D&D reached its peak in 1977. (Just kidding by the way).
