D&D Minitures from GenCon

I heard that the GenCon minis in particular, and official D&D Miniatures minis in general, can affect your RPGA Green Regent character.

For example, if I make an Orc character and use the official Orc miniature, my character gets an extra bonus.

I think this is an interesting idea, but personally I don't like it. Players should be free to use any mini they wish. Giving an extra goodie to one character means you do not give an extra goodie to the other character (say, the halfling wizard character--there's no halfling wizard miniature).

Yeah, well, I didn't get to see Monte on Sunday. Some of us had a long drive home.

Thanks for the info, folks. That clears up some things. So, I guess I was seeing the pointy bits of the other figures when I thought I saw a minotaur.

Yeah, the Green Regent rules do say something to that effect. Not sure I like it too much, either. It's cool, but only if you have the figures, and conform to the character types that are available. There's a similar issue with the random packaging. Can you imagine: "OK, you look down the hall and see three orcs, a medusa and, um, two clerics of yondalla. They attack!"

Oh, well, their marketing strategy worked. I like the lizardfolk so much, I'll probably pick up at least a few packages (the shame of a corporate pawn...) :D

Green Regent? I have no idea what you're talking about. Mind clarifying for the ignorant amongst us (I.E. Me)?

Yeah, it's a temporary hijack of the thread, and I apologize if someone's already posted this somewhere else, but a co-worker sent this to me earlier today and I nearly fell out of my seat... it's at least relevant to the overall theme of the thread ;)

...Smeagal and Gollum:

“New minis are good. We likes the new minis.”

“No. New minis are stupid. We hates them!”

"But new minis are good! They’re pre-painted and they’re cheap.”

“Ugh! Disgusting WOTCs paint the minis! Give them to us raw…and metal…and shiny!”

“But WOTCs are our friends. They helps to fill the needs of an underserved part of the market!”

“Paint jobs are sloppy. We could paints them better with our eyeses closed.”

“But these minis not display pieces. We just wants them to play the game.”

“New minis aren’t for D&D players. They only wants us to play their new minis game. They made 3.5 just so they can sell more minis!”

“With the new minis, we can play both!”

“WOTCs are tricksy. They stole the Chainmail! The Precious! And we wants it back!”

“No. No. WOTCs want to help us. They use random packaging to reduce the number of unique sku numbers that local gaming stores need to order, streamlining the ordering process and reducing the risk of left over product that has to be taken as a write-off, thereby ensuring a lower cost to the consumer!”

“What?”

“Random minis are good!”

“No! We hates random minis! WOTCs are just jumping on the bandwagon. They makes rare minis so people will by lots of boxes! They just wants to make money! They make us buy boxes and boxes just to find the one mini we wants.”

“If you wants just one mini, you can gets it from the aftermarket.”

“Then we pays through our noses for it!”

“Not listening! Not listening!”

“We told you they was tricksy! We told you they was false!”

“WOTCs are good to us. If WOTCs make money, then we keep getting new products!”

“Stupid fat WOTCs! They don’t care about you! They’re just a faceless corporation that only wants your money to put in their filthy pocketses!”

“Well, if you don’t likes it, then don’t buys it!”

“What did you say?”

“I said…if you don’t likes it, then don’t buys it!”

Miniatures
It's easy to start playing Legacy of the Green Regent. We're making pre-generated characters available for each class, so you can fire them off your printer and start playing. These quickstart characters are also tied to figures from the upcoming D&D miniatures line, so it's easy to track down good miniatures for your game. You even gain special benefits when you use the exact miniature with your quickstart character.

Since D&D 3.5, Legacy of the Green Regent, and the new D&D miniatures line all emphasize the dynamic, visual representation of the game with figs, battle grids, and terrain, we thought we'd help you take the experience a step further. The main RPGA site will feature a series of articles to help you take your miniatures to the max. As Skip Williams sheds light on a variety of topics including touching up and modifying minis or special considerations when working with plastics or metal, you're bound to discover a trick or two, so your Green Regent mini stands out poised for action.

As we ready our web launch, the intelligents reports keep rolling in. Be sure to visit again soon. We just received a scintillating tidbit about Stedd Rein and the Red Fellowship, which we just might be willing to share.
