It’s always cool seeing something like D&D pop up in a serious university setting like University Challenge, because it shows how student culture and academic life overlap more than people think. A lot of students pick up games like this in college libraries or dorms, and it actually helps build problem-solving and teamwork skills, even if it’s not part of a formal lesson. Honestly it lines up with how UC sometimes does its pop-culture rounds: they’ll dip into games, comics, anime, etc. and as long as the clue is vaguely fair it’s in play. D&D monsters are pretty recognisable even outside the hobby now (beholders, owlbears, dragons, etc.), so it’s not surprising they show up.

It's name sounded French to me. I figured it probably came from French folklore. So many of the creatures come from real world folklore, so why not this one.
