D&D 5E D&D needs Mouseguard/BW style Goals etc.

A lot of PbtA games focus XP on a combination of campaign goals and character goals.

Essentially they form a checklist you go over at the end of the session and if one of the points was achieved, the PC gets XP for it.

I have tried this in a group and found it worked really well. It kept fresh in mind the goals of the campaign and gave incentive for characters to find their own particular way of resolving conflicts (such as diplomacy vs violence)

The XP system in 5e is fluid enough that you could easily replace the system with almost any other system, as long as it's balanced around a pace of progression you're happy with.

In regards to PIBTF, I plan to take a different (non XP) approach in my next campaign.
