D&D 5E D&D Next is a crappy name.

It positively screams corporate jingoism.

Have these people actually met their core audience?

They're not going to call it D&D Next. That's just a code name they're using for now because they haven't figured out what they're going to call it.

Mike Mearls has said, "I’d love to just call it Dungeons & Dragons and leave the edition numbering behind."

Of course, we all know that everyone's going to call it "D&D Fifth Edition" anyway.

It's a poor piece of marketing language for 5e. It's like your terribly behind the times mom or dad trying to be "cool" and trying really, really too hard and making you feel embarassed when they show up at a party you're having.

But admittedly, so far WotC is doing -much- better than last time around IMO.

It is the Fifth Edition to me, but they have forced me accept their label for the sake of finding their articles and news releases. <wrinkles his face>

It is indeed a poor name, but I'm pretty sure it's just a code name. I think they chose it because they wanted to avoid having people refer to it as Fifth Edition, or 5e, or whatever... but that was never going to work - people have been referring to 5e since before 4e was released (or announced, for that matter). They were never going to turn that tide.

I very much hope they go with "Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition".

IMO, the edition qualifier is absolutely necessary, since they will need to differentiate it from that which has gone before (if nothing else, they will need to highlight incompatibility with the existing products out there, or risk confusing new customers). And giving it an edition name that is anything other than the number will lead them into trouble in a few years when they decide to do 6e... and despite any intentions they may think they have of getting off the edition treadmill, they should recognise that they haven't managed to do that so far, and are unlikely to succeed now.
