Mearls character is what is wrong with dungeons and dragons and to see this kind of pure stupidity from the lead designer is just horrible. It was not funny just juvenile and pathetic.

And thus he perfectly playtested what probably 75% of the gaming populace are going to do with the game. ;)

They're not giving us the D&D game we want... they're giving us the D&D game we deserve. Heh heh.

I can understand not liking Mearl's playstyle in this one particular session, but come on. It's not "What is wrong with dungeons and dragons". There's definitely a list, but how Mike plays characters isn't on it.

I was meaning as it currently is being developed/tested ie NEXT, not the hobby as a whole. When the lead designer doesn't take a video of a demo game that is supposed to encourage people to purchase the product seriously what does he consider important. Showing up to something like this not prepared and then turning it into a joke and basically being a tool that wants to show off how he can "roleplay" a joke character.

We don't need rules to have immature players, ill prepared players, comic-relief is not something dependent on mechanics. As the face of D&D NEXT and the head of it's design I was greatly disappointed.

Hellooo, reality check; you're playing make believe with dice with other grown ups. You're not some artsy fartsy avantgarde performance artist. It's a friggin game. :)

Ehm, no, don't agree with you there. There's room for quiet solemnity and there's room for raucous hilarity in RPG's, and thus in D&D. Besides which, he actually played the character extremely well as a LE psychopath, absurd background or no.

Juvenile is harsh, I'd say more immersion breaking as his character made no sense for the setting. Had it been D&D modern on the other hand it would have been really great, it was funny and cleaver. It would have been worse if this had been a Ravenloft character, it would have single handedly ruined the atmosphere of the game.

Honestly I couldn't care about any part of it except the Q&A section anyways.

Thanks for the you tube link.

The last playtest session with Mearls as the DM had an absurd character too. That fruitarian cleric of that plant god. Yes, it wasn't so far out there like the beer & pretzel character MC Killzalot, but hey, it's just a game. Nothing wrong with having some stupid fun now and then. Just watch or listen to the Aquisition Incorporated games. These are some of the most funniest games I've ever seen. :)

If the whole group is ok with it, why not?

If everyone at the table is having fun, there is no 'wrong'.

Very true at our games as consumers. Not true when it is a video designed to spur interest in a game and show off in house playtesting. I said all along Mearls was a very poor choice to lead this thing and now it seems I am being proven right. It is like he doesn't care about the game or his job.
