D&D should go point based!

Personally, I like having random elements to character creation -- life is not "fair", so why should a game be? Few of us have direct compensations for the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. In fact, in my games I have added extra random elements, including lifepath charts and the like. No point buys -- all rolling (though with a slightly odd system that incorporates some aspects of picking as well).

I find such systems much more satisfying. :)

I apologize for the hijack, and dont mean to insult greydown but--

Does it seem like ENWorld is gettin alot of posts like this latety? By people with few posts writing thinly veiled advertisements to get interest in a product/widget/thingee?

I know this is an old ploy, but I at least rarely saw it here before, ENWorld was always like a refuge from that. With sucess comes such things I guess.

Again Greydown, I do not mean to insult you. Just seein alot of this it seems. Im sure Everstone is a nice product. And I like BESM d20. And Ill give you the benfit of the doubt your not connected with it.

But for me personally (to get on subject) I like the traditional classes, and levels and the rolled abilty scores. They are kinda archetypal straitjackets, but warts and all, tt aint D&D without it IMHO.

The thought of it causes my head to hurt. I like the way D&D is now. I don't see it becoming a point based game. It would be throwing out many years worth of blood, sweat, and tears that the industries best have poured themselves into. And I, for one, would never accept it and would simply stop playing. I like BESM and M&M but they are not D&D.
But I think I get your point. You want more customization in the character creation and I agree. You want to choose the abilities of the character as they level up and I agree. The closest thing I have seen to this and still keeping it D&D is the generic classes in UA. The moment I saw them I was in love. I really think that WOTC should expand on this concept. It's golden! But stick to the core mechanics of D&D. Do you want D&D to turn out to be the New Coke of the RPG industry? I hope not.

Wow. So what am I selling for this company exactly...a free book...heheheheh that is funny.

Watching to much x-files (I see a conspiracy in every corner). Sometimes I don't know why I post (guess its cause of the cool people and not conspiracy getters huh?).

Ya. I think I come from a background of games like Hero. I really like that game. I really like the new d6 point based games to. They both have their strong points.

So Psion I was wondering is there a list of d20 point based systems. Or does anybody have any that I don't know about.

The ones I have, although I have not played all is

Mutants and Masterminds (www.mutantsandmasterminds.com)
BESM d20 (www.guardiansorder.com)
Everstone (www.irongolemgames.com)

hmmm guess I don't know very many. But that is why I started this thread. Maybe somebody could help me with more point based d20 games? (with website address if you have it).

Please no more slander against my mother, my brother, my post, how fat I am. Can we actually just keep the post to a question?

Thanks.

I will definitely take a look at the system. I do prefer to keep D&D with classes and levels, but point-based d20 might make it easier for me as the DM to build new classes. :)

I can't beleive you forgot the most obvious point based d20 game: D&D!! With Point Buy, getting average of full hit popints per level, and other options the base game becomes total point buy.

Now if you want pure leveless and classless I have yet to see anything better then Buy the Numbers (another that was forgotten about). And It is not like I haven't looked.

and you might want to fix the link. :D

I would definitely not want a game like that - I like to have my players roll for ability scores and for hit points. As a player, I also like to roll for ability scores and hit points. Some randomness is good!

I'm right there with you, but the options are there for people who want them.

Indeed they are. I think the original poster, however, was referring to choosing feats, skills, etc. on the basis of something like 'character points' ala skills and powers from 2nd ed.
