WotC D&D's Christopher Perkins Promoted to Creative Director

Perkins moves from Game Architect to Creative Director.

On Twitter WotC's Christopher Perkins clarified queries about his new role after it was revealed that the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide would be his last book as Product Lead--he is now D&D's Creative Director, which looks like a broader, more overview-type job. Creative Director was the role that Mike Mearls held until 2018 before moving over the Magic: The Gathering, and George Krstic held a similarly named role until August this year.

Not true. I was a Game Design Architect. Now I’m the Creative Director, which is a more “behind the scenes” gig that lets me play quietly in a bunch of different sandboxes. #wotcstaff

We did confirm this on our live recording, out this Wednesday. I spoke to a few other team members first, then to Chris when I got something signed (the only reliable way to know I would see him). His role is somewhat like what Mike did, but more formal and intentional around cross-media (movies, TV).

Cross-media...such as...cartoons...

I mean, sounds like he is the D&D story and lore guru, leveled up, basically. May he prosper in the role!

I suppose it will be interesting to see who takes on Chris' old role. I have to be honest and say he was one of the few people I've still heard of around there. Maybe those folks use social media and I just miss it but I've got no idea who's even there at the moment.

I hope the omission of video games is one of brevity in the blurb and not intent from WotC... This one area I agree the D&D brand is undermonetized--I have money and I will gladly throw it at good games like Baldur's Gate 3!

The impression I got from Sven is part of why Larian wasn't interested in BG4 was that literally everyone they worked with on BG3 at WotC has been laid off. So that's the kind of challenge I would hope a new cross-media Creative Director could tackle.

While this was kind of hinted at, the reality is quite different.
Nathan Stewart left to work in video games full time.
Mike Mearls was laid off.

There were others involved too. IIRC one retired. Another went to video games full time. The layoffs barely touched the level of people who worked on BG3, which also included Crawford and Perkins

Yeah, I think he was juat talking about Mealrs and Stewart, the guys in the room when they pitched.

My impression is that the reason Larian isn't making BG4 is that they have more fun working on Divinity games. I don't think there's anything WotC could do to change that.
