D1: Ashin's Commission (El Jefe judging)

(OOC: By the way--something I always forget and just making sure you remembered, but Ironwolf and Hulgyr automatically deal unarmed strike damage when they initiated their grapples successfully. You may have already done that, but if my SoC took one out, I figure their US damage might do it too (Hulgyr has insane Strength and Ironwolf is big so he gets a better damage dice :))

OoC: Ok, maybe I'm missing something here. I tried to figure out how Hulgyr automatically does unarmed strike damage on a grapple. Hmm, looked in the PHB...not a 1/2 orc ability, not a barbarian ability, not a fighter ability. Feats? Hmm...Power Attack, Cleave, Weapon Focus (Greatsword)...no, none of those have anything to do with grappling or damage during grappling. Ok, skills...nothing terribly martial there, at least not connected with grappling. Maybe he's got armor spikes or something? MW Chain...no, no armor spikes listed. Ok, maybe it's an Orc racial thing...checked the MM...no, not there, either. So, help me out, just how does Hulgyr do automatic unarmed strike damage during a grapple? Hmm, just checked the grapple rules...you can choose to do damage as an attack, but Hulgyr isn't up to multiple attacks/round yet. Of course, he can choose to inflict damage next turn (since the soldier didn't break the grapple), but somehow I don't think that's what you mean.

(OOC: It's not your fault. This is *obscure* and I played for over a year before I saw it. Look for the Bolded part of this direct quote.)

Starting a Grapple
To start a grapple, you need to grab and hold your target. Starting a grapple requires a successful melee attack roll. If you get multiple attacks, you can attempt to start a grapple multiple times (at successively lower base attack bonuses).

Step 1
Attack of Opportunity. You provoke an attack of opportunity from the target you are trying to grapple. If the attack of opportunity deals damage, the grapple attempt fails. (Certain monsters do not provoke attacks of opportunity when they attempt to grapple, nor do characters with the Improved Grapple feat.) If the attack of opportunity misses or fails to deal damage, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2
Grab. You make a melee touch attack to grab the target. If you fail to hit the target, the grapple attempt fails. If you succeed, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3
Hold. Make an opposed grapple check as a free action.

If you succeed, you and your target are now grappling, and you deal damage to the target as if with an unarmed strike.

If you lose, you fail to start the grapple. You automatically lose an attempt to hold if the target is two or more size categories larger than you are.

In case of a tie, the combatant with the higher grapple check modifier wins. If this is a tie, roll again to break the tie.

Step 4
Maintain Grapple. To maintain the grapple for later rounds, you must move into the target’s space. (This movement is free and doesn’t count as part of your movement in the round.)

Moving, as normal, provokes attacks of opportunity from threatening opponents, but not from your target.

If you can’t move into your target’s space, you can’t maintain the grapple and must immediately let go of the target. To grapple again, you must begin at Step 1.

The Stonepike Mountains

Round 6[sblock=Hulgyr, Michael, Ironwolf: ]- Hulgyr threatened unpleasantness and got ready to tackle the soldier.
- Michael told the soldier to just drop it.
- The soldier started to run but Hulgyr gave him a great big hug.

A little retconning here, thanks to Rystil Arden:

Private Kneeler started to squat, then caught himself and shook off the effects of Michael's magic. He turned to run, and Hulgyr, standing in the path, reached out to grab him. The soldier tried to ward him off with his shortspear, but the tip skidded off Hulgyr's chain shirt. Hulgyr easily seized the frightened infantryman and bore him to the ground, knocking the wind right out him.

- The soldier started to run but Hulgyr gave him a great big hug.

"Kneeler" lay stunned for a moment, then struggled mightily to break free of Hulgyr's grasp, but to no avail. He started yelling, "Help! Help! They got me!" at the top of his lungs and continued to wriggle in the powerful orc's grasp.

Ironwolf rushed up and piled atop the struggling soldier. The terrified soldier thrashed like a man posessed, but Ironwolf's extra size allowed him to easily overpower the man, who passed out cold when the oversized version of Ironwolf landed on top of him.

OoC: Ironwolf beats Private Kneeler's grapple check and successfully joins the grapple. Private Kneeler takes enough non-lethal damage to lose consciousness.

- Ironwolf declared a group hug and hugged the soldier until he decided to take a nap.
- Someone in the woods said, "Ow!"

OoC:...and we're still waiting on the "woods group".[/sblock][sblock=Zaeryl, Eternity, Almayce: ]OoC: No change from last post:

- Zaeryl said the soldiers didn't play well with others and got ready to blast them.
- One of the soldiers in the clearing said he didn't like playing this game.
- When one of his buddies said the others weren't playing nice, one of the soldiers blew his horn.
- Another soldier said, "Gimme all your toys!"

Eternity moved up to blast Private Stander, Private Squatter closed with Zaeryl, and Zaeryl blasted Private Squatter.

Private Squatter cried out in pain as thousands of tiny crystals ripped his flesh, then fell at Zaeryl's feet. Eternity ignored the distraction to her left, her concentration unaffected. A beam of fire sprang from her body and shot toward Private Stander.

OoC: Erekose13, go ahead and roll Eternity's attack if you please. I've already rolled the damage (forgot it was a ray, and that you needed to succeed on the attack roll first).

- Eternity started to light a soldier on fire.
- Another soldier started to throw things at Eternity.
- Zaeryl threw crystals at that soldier until he fell down.

OoC: Doh! Forgot to add in Con HP bonus for Private Squatter. My apologies, this changes the outcome of the round, but not anyone's stated actions. And yes, RA, I went back and checked the damage on Private Kneeler, and the outcome as stated above did not change there.

- Zaeryl played a mean trick on that soldier

Private Squatter cried out in pain as thousands of tiny crystals ripped his flesh. He glowered at Zaeryl, malice aforethought, but as a well-disciplined and loyal trooper of Fallon, he chucked his shortspear not at Zaeryl, but at Eternity, who was threatening his comrade. Unfortunately for him, Eternity ducked the throw with an elegant twist of her body, her concentration unaffected. A beam of fire sprang from her body and shot toward Private Stander.

- Eternity played with fire and nearly burned a soldier.

The blazing gout of flame struck Private Stander's armor a glancing blow on the shoulder of the arm holding his shortspear, and deflected off harmlessly, setting the lower branches of a nearby tree on fire.

OoC: Leather armor, so...

IC: Almayce ordered Private Squatter to Halt!, and he momentarily froze in place, his vision clouded over. The trooper shook his head, and when his eyes reopened, they were not only clear, but colored with both fear and anger.

OoC: Made his save by 1. I don't know whether that's good luck or bad luck for either him or you.

- Almayce tried to make a soldier stop, but the soldier decided Almayce couldn't make him.

Summary: Private Squatter is badly hurt, but standing and free to act. Private Stander is holding a horn and shortspear and seems largely uninjured. Obviously, they both know they're in a fight!

OoC: I don't think Michael needs to use the sap. :D You want to give me a new action for Round 7?

"Get your dad-burned crystal and head for the horses!"
(Edited for Grandmother.)

Michael wheels and pelts towards the scream and flame.
If a soldier appears in front of him, he whacks him on the head with the sap.
Otherwise, he double moves.

Two minutes -- less if they send cavalry.

Hulgyr releases his grab on the knocked-out soldier and if nobody took the bag with the crystal from the grappled soldier he does so now. After that he sprints for the group in the woods. If he encounters any soldier on the way he'll punch him.

ooc: what's the estimated distance to the group in the woods?
