Trick: target must have an Intelligence score of 3+, within 30 ft, be able to hear and understand the hero. Hero spends a full-round action and makes an Intelligence check (DC 15), adding Smart level as a bonus. If the Intelligence check succeeds, the target makes a Will saving throw (DC 10 + Smart hero’s class level + Smart hero’s Int bonus) or target becomes dazed for 1 round

Zé-Antonio Costa is a 27 year old aerospace engineer from Brazil. He did his undergrad in Mech. Eng at the University of San Paolo, and PhD at MIT. His research focused on the control of matter-antimater reactions, applicable to propulsion, as well as the less cutting edge field of ionic propulsion. After graduating at the young age of 22, he worked for Embraer in Brazil for 3 years. He quickly made a name for himself and at 26, had his choice of top research jobs at UTC, Lockheed-Martin and Bombardier Aerospace.

He opted for the latter, and moved to Montreal in 2023, and quickly got his Canadian Citizenship. In 2025, he was transferred to Ottawa to participate in a top-secret project in partnership with the Canadian government. He's mainly responsible for the HMS Hope's novel (at the time) propulsion system (and is very proud of it!).

Ze is a friendly guy, unless you dare to make a derogatory comment on his designs and gadgets. He's relatively skinny, with dark hair and light brown skin (it's pretty clear that he's from south america). He speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English and french.

He never married, but has started befriending a few comely single women aboard the ship.

He's an expert in now antiquated technology, some of his research was revolutionary at the time, and likely were the base for many current advances.[/sblock]

I'm a bit stuck (and overwhelmed) with the equipment. Any recommendations? For example, can we have Subcutaneous Body Armor?

Lem's going for it, but he's military so that'd be in their best interest. ;)

OK, thanks. FYI, Zé will basically have spent ALL his wealth. His thinking was that since he was leaving earth, he wouldn't need it anyways so he blew it all on gadgets.

I'm almost done with his equipment and should post it within the next couple of days.

Also, I'm having second doubts about taking the renown feat. Even if it meshes nicely with the character's backstory, I hate to essentially "waste" a feat, as specially if it has a very minor impact on role playing (I've gotten burned in the past when I took feats purely for role play purposes). I'd much rather take the Personal Firearms Proficiency feat.

Besides, it's still possible to incorporate the idea of him being the originator of several new concepts in propulsion systems, without the actual feat. His reputation (and the fact that he's still alive) will simply grow with time (and level).

I should have my PC posted up tonight. He is almost done, just need to flesh out a few things (including equipment...I hate to say it, but I'm still not sold on the whole Wealth system).
 

As I said previously, I'm on my way to Germany today, so updates later this week will be sporadic. I'll move what I have to the RG---still need to finalize equipment.
 

OK, my character is up in the RG.
The equipment is complete (unless I forgot something obvious). I took 20 for purchase DCs, figuring that our characters knew at least a few months in advance that they were part of the "chosen" to escape.
My character basically sold everything he owned, and spent all his wealth on stuff he thought he would need, should the ship survive the trip.

Please let me know if I screwed someting up.

Lonesoldier,

I noticed that Steve's character has subcutaneous body armor. Are you allowing this? I only ask because it is widely considered to be very broken. If it is allowed, let me know, as that would be high on my want list as well.

Rhun, you may also but the body armour. I've never ran into a problem with player characters using it, but if it proves to be very broken I might add an Armour Check Penalty depending on the class of the armour (Light, Medium, Heavy). This ACP would likely be half the ACP of an equivalent D&D armour.

I only took it because Ze could afford it and it didn't have the hidrance of having an ACP (besides, what would be the point of making your skin tough, if you can't move when you're naked!). I don't see it as overpowered: my character isn't a military type, so it's not as if he'll be wearing heavy armor, increasing further his AC. It just helps with survivability.

If it's off limits or if it has an ACP, it I'll drop it and buy other goodies. Please let me know ASAP so I can update my equipment.
