D20 Future to be realeased in 2004

Darn it!

That gives me only about a year to complete my own d20 sci-fi game and setting :(

I'd better get cracking :D

Heh, I know what you mean.

I've got two near future campaign ideas I want to develop - Project: Phoenix (a near future spy game) and First Defense (like G.I. Joe with cybernetic and FX powers fight evil aliens).

D20 Future is exactly what I figured WotC would eventually do after D20 Modern was announced. Plus, I'm pretty sure WotC will put some, if not all of the D20 Future material into the Modern SRD.

Cheers!

Honestly, I think either WotC just had a marketing fit (unlikely), or they recognize that there is a market there, and are staking a claim. Lord knows many groups shied away from doing their own take on modern era games after d20Modern was merely anounced. I think this will mostly serve to scare developers away from this type of product :(, for fear that fans will ignore it in favor of waiting to see what WotC has to offer.
Yes, Morgenstern, that is truly their agenda. :p

But it didn't stop you guys from releasing Spycraft earlier.

We had that head start that comes from starting first :). (I remember talking to Patrick about it in '99). As I recall, we put Spycraft in people's hands the same show that WotC officially anounced d20Modern. I look forward to flipping through d20 Future (I adore space opera), but I ain't waiting for it :p.

GAMA 2002 rocked - I got asked for my autograph for the first time over dinner and 350 copies of that stunning silver volume. That is a magical moment for a freelancer 8).

FYI: I am contracted to write approximately 64 pages of d20 Future, and I've already been to my first design meeting.

Naturally I WON'T be able to share details with you ... but I will be able to read your comments and keep them in mind during meetings and the design process.

...since they provided a laundry list that an number of other developers could convert into damm fine products. And given that the base is already in place (d20Modern) develop it in 4-6 months, not over a year...

So is there even anything to stop another publisher from callint their product d20 Future, or d20 Space, or something like that?

Unless "d20 Future" has been claimed as a trademark, anyone can use it.

Then again, Wizards is registering d20 with regards to the rules system as a trademark, NOT as a type of die.

But from the consumer market standpoint, one should not try to confuse the public by using the same title as your competition.
