d20 Gatchaman

I didn't think I was going to bother with d20 Modern, but recently, I've been thinking about doing a Gatchaman campaign. (For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, visit http://www.vacuform.com/Gatchaman/GatchMain.htm, and http://www.gatchaman.com/) Gatchman, with its combination of superheroics and mecha based plot, along with the upcoming rules for Mecha in Dungeon magazine, is going to be a perfect fit for d20 Modern. (None of this WP/VP nonsense, either --- if you watch the TV series, you'll realize that the entire series ran off of hit points :-)

Dude :)! I am a huge fan of Gatchaman. I'm also a mechanics writer for Spycraft. Doing Gatchaman is EASY in spycraft :D. We've got a book coming out that is the "Anime-Espionage" sourcebook for the Shadowforce Archer setting (the book is called the "Pan-Asian Collective") and there is some distinctly Gatchaman-oriented goodness in there :).

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about...
For any American who doesn't know what you're talking about, it's the original Japanese version of Battle of the Planets and G-Force. If you watch the Battle of the Planets DVDs -- they have all three versions of each episode -- you simply will not believe the terrible things they did to the original show.

*wince* Yeah. Battle of the Planets rocked when I was 10. Now it's a little painful to look at. Go with the translated original stuff at any opportunity. The OAVs were lots of fun, but I haven't bought another UrbanVision product since, as the monkeys there seemed to think they needed to start messing with the names and rewriting bits, instead of doing their job: translating.

Gatchaman is definitely Good Stuff :D.

Woah! I don't even have Spycraft. Do a little selling here and show me how easy it is. :) (A sample character would do)

I was thinking of statting all the characters, and then letting players bid on the characters they wish to play using a fixed pool of hero points. (So you can play the Joe or Ken, but it'll cost you, or you can play Jinpei and have a ton of hero points to start) I'm thinking of using hero points to power certain moves (such as the ranged cleave/great cleave that happens whenever one of the Gs mows down great hordes of gallactor's men). PCs would gain hero points for doing certain things (like infiltrating into an enemy base solo, which is something that happens irrationally often in the show, or making a cool entrace and saying the tag line "The white shadow..."). How would you model all that in Spycraft?

God do I love those kids

I love Gatchaman myself and if SPycraft can pull it off, I am so there on Spycraft. LOL. QUestion to Gatcha freaks. DO you like the new comic book series from Alex ROss and I have seen the Gatchaman DVD series and Battle of the Planets DVD series. WHich should I get?

Easiest place to start is to send you over to www.Spycraftrpg.com , where you'l find all of the base (20-level) classes posted up through level 5, which is fine since after level 5 you'd probably start taking prestige classes. The basic game system is also availible as a down load, anlong with a few other bits in the preview and resources sections.

Ken is blatantly a point man- meaning he gets a good balance of skills and vitality, can give his action dice (a limited supply of extra dice you can roll after making a roll to improve it) to any one on his team. He gets the ability to speed up teammates long term activities (he can help Ryu navigate, or assit Jason in tuning up his car) and gets the "Lead" ability, which means sveral times per session he can make a skill check (like Hide or Sport (Skydiving)) and apply his result to his entire team.

Joe is a Soldier. He's got better fighting skills (BAB and more feats) than anyone else on the team. He's tough (a little bit of damage reduction and can make better use of the armor concealed in their outfits), and in particular I'd give him the Rocket Basics feat (and Rocket Mastery if you are playing at a higher level) for his love of launching Bird Missiles.

Jun is a Fixer. That gives her tons of skill points (for Hide, Move Silent, Demolitons). It also gives her Evasion and Uncanny dodge (nimble, isn't she :p) and some sneak attack bonuses

Jinpei is a Snoop. He serves as the team's hacker and occasional mechanic. It'd also give him "flawless search" so he almost never fails to come up with some useful tid-bit while in investigative mode.

Ryu is pure wheelman. He's an ace pilot able to handle the God Phoenix with mastery. Throw in the vehicle familiarity and a decent skill base as a mechanic and you've got a hard working team of super agents.

That's a real basic start. You can tune it closer with the department choices, feat, and a little multiclassing (super agents do not have to put up with XP penalties when multi-classing :D). I can see giving Ken at least one level in Wheelman who he can get the Daredevil class ability to improve his chase skills (Spycraft has a whole chapter devoted to chases). Jun might take a level of Faceman to build up some disguise ability.

Most likely the whole team has the Stealthy feat, giving them a +2 bonus to Hide and Move Silently and increasing their threat ranges with those skills (you can crit and fumble with skills in Spycraft). All of them then get outfited with gadgets (from the ISO, naturally) including their hopped up vehicles and most likely holographic camoflage suits (a gadget included in the man book).

The mass-transfer effect gadgets and a "tech-ninja" type class goes into the Pan Asia book to perfect them, but you could do damn formidable versions right now. Whirlwind pyramids by January :).

The feats are there :). Take a look at the free Spycraft Lite download to see who action dice work and we'll talk some more :). As to cool introduction lines, that's exactly what giving out action die as rewards is there for!

Ok, I like the classes (especially the soldier class). But I'm having trouble finding the rules on action dice. From the reviews it seems like they are die boosters, but not nearly as flexible as my vision of hero points would be.

I notice that Demolitions isn't a skill in Spycraft (unlike Call of Cthulhu). Is it in there somewhere and I'm just missing it?

Right now, I'd have to go with Deeds Not Words and mix in Mecha Crusade when it appears to take care of the giant robots.

Ok, so is it like this?

Gatchaman-------G-Force

Joe---------------- Mark
Ken--------------- Jason
Ryu----------------Tiny
Jinpei -------------Cheops
Jun-----------------Princess

Is that about right? I Don't know their Japanese names, just their G-Force names.

Is Gallactor Zoltar?
