D&D 4E d20 Modern 4e

Well, it would be madness to produce two systems in one year, so I expect d20 Modern 2.0 with the best of 4e in 2009 or 2010. It is still good selling system (despite no new products) too good to be left alone, I guess. Once WotC will free some developers from working on 4e (which mean no sooner than at the beginning of 2008) they might work on Modern.

hmm, reading up on 4e makes me think that they can deploy a generic modern day and sci-fi book inside 4e if done right. new classes maybe, and new guns and stuff, but overall keep the d&d basics.

that was the problem of d20 modern for wotcs part, it duplicated d&d rather then build on it. you had your own main book, monster book, equipment and so on.

so if they can manage to introduce modern talent trees or similar, then things become fairly interesting.

True, but imagine the hassle of having to make sure all PI was protected, all relevant mechanics were declared open, and all mechanics utilizing PI terms and concepts were either reworked into open versions or locked down? All with clear statements to tell publishers what's what?

Not so easy.
But not impossible. If they're using some of the better game mechanics from the Saga Edition rules, they will go over the text and remove anything that is part of Lucasfilms' IP.

Despite their lack of creative fluff-writing, they're pretty proficient with the crunch part.

I dunno. Many devoted d20 Modern fans would rather their game be kept a far distance away from D&D. After all, when d20 Modern was announced, many fans didn't want many D&D-themed mechanics (like class-by-profession) to be repeated in the core rulebook.

Besides, D&D is a gear-dependant game. I play D&D so I can get the baddest magical (or artifact) arms, armors, and special items I can find.

I don't see any reason why a 3rd party publisher couldn't reverse engineer a Modern 4E from the D&D 4E SRD. If WOTC isn't interested in doing their own Modern update, I don't think they would stop someone from publishing a 3rd party version.

And without knowing what changes 4E really has in store, any Modern update needs to take a long and hard look at Spycraft 2.0. There are a lot of cool things in SC that should be part of any modern game.

umm I think they call that breach of copyright!

And just because they don't want to does not mean they will allow others.

Modern doesn't have LucasFilm and a big anniversary to come around to ask for a new version.

But it does have a niche demographic in the RPG world. I've never heard it say that d20 Modern was a failure for WoTC, so I see no reason why they won't repeat the model they did for 3E: launch fantasy 4e, and a couple of years after launch modern II or whatever.

I have to agree with most of the previous replies in that I think that there will not be an official d20 Modern 2nd Edition. The two main RPG genres are fantasy and sci-fi and D&D and Star Wars fill those niches nicely.

I think it more likely that you will see a one-off supplementary book for D&D which will provide core classes, feats, equipment and spells for contemporary/historical campaigns (along the lines of Dark Matter, Urban Arcana, Greyhawk 2000 and Masque of the Red Death).

That appears to be changing in 4e, from what's been mentioned so far.

Wot? D20 Modern not be treated like the redheaded stepchild of WotC? Unlikely.

I'll still play it. But it doesn't differ from 3.5e in that aspect, though.
