d20 modern auto fire?

Ranger, Crothian, the rules for cover are almost identical to those found in D&D. If you shoot into melee or at someone behind someone else, the idiot in this case, and your roll was sufficient to hit the target without cover but now misses as a result of the cover, the idiot, your shot/strike hits the cover. As far as the idiot standing in front of the target area, I would rule cover to all those that had it by line of sight. The idiot is covering some but not all in the target area.

Also, damage from autofire is handled differently than other modern setting games. All targets in the area of effect, 10'x10', make a reflex save and take damage acourdingly. Individual bullets are ignored as the damage is the same for each target just like an area effect spell. However, to autofire you need at least 10 bullets unless you have the requisite feat, Improved Autofire or some such, that lets you walk your fire in a 5'x20' line and use 5 bullets instead of 10.

I haven't tried these rules yet but I must say I am intreged.

why not just do it like this...
roll reflex saves for the "cover" person as normal, on the dc 15.
if they fail their reflex save they didn't move in time and provided cover, giving anyone behind them a cover bonus to their reflex save. if they make their save they dodge out of the way and don't provide a cover bonus for those behind them.

And what will happen to the idiot that stands between me and my autofire target area?

Well there have been a couple on neat 'house rules' for this situation provided above, but as far as I can see from the actual rules. They will be fine.

The bullets either travel in a high arch over the person or some sort of wormhole effect takes place an the bullets travel from the barrel of the gun to the target 10' x 10' area without passing through the space in between.

If this wasn't the case they would have said that autofire effected a cone shaped area, not just a 10' by 10' square.

Personally I think the designers and playtesters should be put in a 10' by 10' square for letting the autofire/burst and strafe rules ever get to print.
