Wow, it's about time someone else thought of using d20 Modern as the future of D&D settings (or at least time someone admitted it).  I have always thought of d20 Modern this way, mainly because I prefer my modern campaigns to be a mix of modern and fantasy.  I have tried to explain this idea to people before, but many just don't seem to comprehend it.  I'm glad someone's thinking along the same lines as I am.  
 
Anyways, if you're looking for a way to adapt D&D magic to Modern, there are some books out there that look at magic as an evolutionary process. Modern Magic by The Game Mechanics does this, and I am sure there are others out there.
