[d20 Modern] Terminator: Future Fate is Here!

Honestly, I wasn't sure how to categorize it myself. I don't have licenses for the material -- unless being a fan counts and I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

That said, I wouldn't have even submitted it if I hadn't seen the Conan web site win. That web site is fantastic.

The problem was that my submissions (Evil Dead, Terminator) are more a repository for documents. And technically, it's a blend between the two -- they're free product on a fan site. Although I don't consider my site to be anything but dreadfully drab.

It will get better, I promise!

Anyway, I'm thrilled to be nominated -- thanks for even considering me.

I do have one question though: would it be inappropriate to talk about the ENnie nomination (including, "If you liked this, vote here" links) in the documents themselves?

As the documents were the original submission, it makes it a bit difficult to compete, given that the site by itself is unlikely to get votes.

Talien, are you going to be at GenCon Indy? If so, are you bringing some hard copies of T:FF? I'd like to talk to you about some ideas for layout that could really improve the presentation (and also to get the chance to geek out over your work, as it is quite nice :))

Hiya Morgenstern,

Yeah I go to Gen Con every year. My first hardcover, Mercenaries: Born of Blood, should be out by then. I'm not sure if Combat Missions, from Paradigm Concepts, will be in print in time for Gen Con. I do know for sure that Frost and Fur, from MonkeyGod Enterprises, won't be showing up until October now (sigh).

I wasn't planning on bringing a print copy but since Evil Dead: Swallow This! and Terminator: Future Fate are both part of the reason I got nominated for Best Campaign Fan Site.

Heck, maybe I'll have them bound and everything.

Anyway, I'm usually near or around the MonkeyGod Enterprises booth. See you there!

Hey Talien, I was just wondering if your being nominated for that Ennie is going to put a halt (however temporarily) on your plans for updating the documents? I hope not, as I just saw T3 today (wow!) and it definately has great stuff to add to T:FF.

See you at GenCon!

Not at all. I revised a bunch of the document already. I'm going over the remaining comics in my collection to see if there's anything else worth updating.

I'm going to wait to release the next version until the voting starts. Should be very soon.

Trying to be savvy. And stuff. >:)

A better link would be the one right to the review itself: http://members.toast.net/talien/tmb/movietv/terminator3.html as a warning to anyone about to click on it, this review does contain spoilers. That said, there are a few places where I disagree with your analysis of stuff, but I won't say them here (especially since we'll get to them anyway when I do my usual post-production editing of the new version when you release it).

*blink-blink*

Oh, you're that Mike. Small world :). Um, probably not, since I need to sign off on the book before it's released, and nobody's sent me a copy yet .

That always looks nice. Hmm. Sounds like we'll have a lot to talk about then :).

Cool. I'm over at either AEG or Twilight Creations depending on the time of day. Look forward to seeing you. We've got a big meet with Paradigm and the whole squad of the 'Powered by Spycraft' publishers. You should see if you can make it!

Whoa,

Yeah, it's definitely a small world, especially the very teensy d20 publishing world. Hope you like Combat Missions when it finally does cross your desk. :)

I definitely plan to say hello to the Paradigm folks as well. Let me know when and where that Spycraft meeting is and I'll be there!

Terminator: Future Fate v 1.6 is up!

After seeing Terminator 3 and purchasing the last remaining Terminator comic books at my local comic book store (the last bastion of geeky fandom that remains in Stamford), I've updated Terminator with all kinds of groovy stuff:

It includes all new information about the movies, including an update to the T-X, additions to the timeline, two new terminators (the mini-HK and the HK Spider), clarification on time travel, and more!

Talien, as always, I'm doing the post-production editing on the work you did (I always feel vaguely bad about this, since it seems like I'm poking holes in your hard work).

Some questions/observations I had about the T-X in the T:FF write-up (and one or two on other creatures):

We're told that the T-X is smarter, stronger, and faster than Arnold's T-800 unit (in fact, he tells us that), but while the T-X in your write-up does have Speed 40 and a Dex of 14 (vs. the T-800's Speed 30 and Dex of 12), it only has an Intelligence of 12 and a Wisdom of 10 - equal to a T-800. Likewise, you've given it a Strength of 18, compared to the T-800's Strength of 26...meaning it's weaker than the T-800 is in terms of physical might.

The attack bonuses seem to be somewhat off, but that could be me showing my ignorance of d20 Modern.

The "Endoskeleton" trait that all Terminators and HK's have now seems somewhat obselete with the T-1000, T-1000000, and T-X. Given that Constructs are already immune to Fort saves (unless they affect objects) anyway, is it really necessary to even list that?

The "Healing" quality seems to need some fixing - When you talk about the T-800 through T-825 series being able to heal like a human can, shouldn't you say that they regain however many hit points per day? Also, you might want to mention if the human restrictions of how many per day apply to that rate. You also list that the T-X and T-1000 have Fast Healing 10. However, the T-X and T-1000 (and, you forgot, the T-1000000) all only have Fast Healing 5.

The T-X apparently has a quality called "Natural Invisibility". What this is is not expounded upon (and I don't think she can actually become invisible).

The darkvision that several of the Terminators have isn't given a range for how far it extends.

I'd recommend listing the range for the T-X's weaponry, just for the sake of convenience, in its description.

The Regeneration quality seems odd. Regeneration, as I understand it, works that any damage except for a specific type is converted to subdual damage, and the numeric value of the Regeneration is how much of that subdual damage is healed. The problem here is that, as a Construct, the T-X (and the other units that have this, such as the T-1000000) are Constructs, and do not take subdual damage. Likewise, not listing a specific attack that bypasses regeneration means nothing can deal real damage to them! I suggest getting rid of Regeneration and bumping their Fast Healing up to 10.

I'm not sure, but shouldn't their be some sort of listing for the T-X's DNA scanning and ability to interface with computerized networks (what it did with that cell phone)?

On an mildly unrelated note, the generic NPCs that you gave for the new advanced classes all have six levels and a CR of 5. What's up with that?

I'd also recommend giving the T-1000000 a hefty Natural Armor bonus, since even with its DR and Fast Healing, a Defense that poor is just abysmal.

The quote for the T-600 entry should be at the top, not between the stats and descriptive text.

additions to the timeline

The entry for 1991 currently says "2000.M fails in its mission, destroyed by a reprogrammed T-800." I have no idea what that is...is there supposed to be a reference link there?

The entry that reads "1997: Sarah Conner dies of leukemia." should be listed after the August 29th entry, since John Conner says that she lived long enough to make sure the end of the world didn't happen. Likewise, this should be mentioned as having happened in an alternate universe, since in the timeline where Judgement Day is 1997 has her die in the nuclear fire.

In the 2000, January 1 entry, it seems odd to say a Terminator "falls to its death" since they cannot die (not being alive). Perhaps its better to say "destruction" instead of "death" there?

The 2003, July 4 entry needs some tweaking. Skynet did not become aware due to some random computer virus. The T-800 confirms that the "virus" is actually Skynet itself spreading across the globe. Skynet, though not self-aware then, was still taking steps to extend and preserve itself even then, creating a catastrophe so the humans would uplink it to the military systems.

For the 2020 entry, it seems odd that at the same time the T-700 series was produced, a T-803 was already made and sent back through time (reference link here please?). Given that the T-700's were just made then, they shouldn't have already had a T-803 to send back, since the T-800 series wasn't produced until 2026.

The 2041 entry seems like it should be tagged with an alternate future notation, since it talks about John Conner, but the previous entry confirms him as dead in 2032.

two new terminators (the mini-HK and the HK Spider)

And the T-1, don't forget the T-1. It's odd that you seem to refer to this as the T-105. From what I recall of T3, these were listed as T1's, and then had a secondary classification number...they weren't anything produced after the T-70.

Not much to note here, save that I feel you should list again the statistics for the Mini-Aerial's missiles right in their entry; its inconvenient to scroll back and forth through a PDF.

clarification on time travel

In the new second paragraph you put in under the Parallel Universe theory, it seems rather ambiguous. In the first paragraph you say that the time traveler is in a whole new world...one that will still follow the set path for itself, and cannot be changed. Seems rather hard to follow.

My suggestion is to list this as a third theory of time travel, one that is a hybrid of the other two: events can be altered, but only inconsequential events - peoples of no importance will have the role they would have fulfilled fulfilled by others instead. Major events can be delayed, not averted. People who would have met, but are prevented from doing so, will eventually meet later, etc. In essence, it is a parallel universe, but one that very strongly echoes the "base" universe...time, under this theory, can be mildly bent, but it untimately immutable.

You may also want to address the notation that twice now we've seen non-living tissue go back without so much as a skin coating: the T-1000 and T-X...perhaps the Time Displacement equipment has been upgraded?

Here's hoping you win that ENnie!
