I was wondering if D20 modern is worth picking up for modern/ sci fi settings? I have been gaming for 20 years, I like the DnD 3rd edtion rules.

My two cents:

PRO: It's a geat big huge whopping book that's a cool read.

CON: You can download the modern SRD from WotC

PRO: It has everything you need for modern adventures including the rise of the shadows and urban arcana

CON: There have been complaints it is too generic. This doesn't bother me, but some folks were bothered by it.

PRO: There is a picture of a gnoll pimp.

PRO: The book has excellent layout and it is easy to reference things. There are also a couple of tables that I would have liked to have seen in the PHB.

I think its worth it.

You betcha. The artwork is great--who could resist a picture of Meepo tricked out as a commando? The book is well organized, and everything is clearly explained. In fact, I'd recommend this as an easier intro to the D20 system than the PH. (Hmm. Perhaps that's why they're revising said PH?)

Of course, I got lucky and bought mine for $15! But it would have been worth it even at the regular price.

I keep seeing SRD used everyplace, what the heck is it?

System Reference Document. It's all of the rules for D20, without any of the flavor text. Part of the Open Gaming movement. Go here to view it.

Edit: The above link is the main SRD. The one for D20 Modern is here.

Well, to be fair, it's not all the rules... just 98% of them :) It's anything that you can include in a D20 work, basicly, which means no experience charts, basicly.

I agree with the other posts. If you like 3E D&D and want to do sci-fi (or anything modern), you HAVE to try out d20 Modern.

In addition to what was mentioned in the other posts, d20 Modern finally makes it fun and useful to play non-fighter types... the Smart hero and Charasmatic heros are great!

It depends....

If you like the pro's and put up with the con's of a class/level system, don't want a particularly realistic or gritty system, and don't have a particular genre or setting in mind (that has another system designed for it) then a YES!

If however say you wanted to run a Buffy the Vampire Slayer game then D20 Modern's Shadow Chaser's is a poor imitation compared to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG.

If you wanted to run a near future cyberpunk style game then either Cyberpunk or Shadowrun would probably be a better buy. D20 Modern has no cyberware as yet.

If you wanted to run a more distant future sci-fi space opera style game then D20 Traveller, D20 Fading Suns, D20 Star Wars or any number designed for the setting games would be better.

If you just want to dip you toe in the water of gaming in a modern setting or want to stick with a familiar 'heroic' system while building your own campaign world, style and setting then D20 Modern is for you.
