d20 Modern, WoT, and a change of pace -- Thoughts?

We (my game group) also made a D20 Shadowrun conversion (but we don`t have a english - or at least "english-only" version, since we often use the englisch terms for certain expressions since we all use english sourcebooks. It uses a new magic system to fit the Shadowrun magic concept. We only had two sessions so far, but it seemed to work.

Well, I speak some German, so I might swipe your rules and try to translate them, since I was thinking about converting Shadowrun, anyway. On the other hand, it's been 6+ years since I've had cause to speak/read German, so I'm a bit rusty.

Why not combine the two?

I love the WoT series, and I'm a huge fan of the D20Modern ruleset--very flexible, definitely a part of the standard D20 rules, so very little difficulty for newbies presents itself.

I once toyed with the idea (at the behest of my fiance--also a WoT fan) to try to combine the D20 modern rules/feel with the WoT universe. If you've read all the way through the series, then some of the flashes back to the age of legends seems an awful lot like a modern world...some of the magic/tech in Lews Therin's flashbacks and all that seem a lot like taser guns and helicopters. The author pretty much comes right out and says at one point that trollocs and myrdraal are the results of genetic engineering/manipulation by the forsaken. You'd probably want to try to port the magic system of WoT to D20M, since the weaves and all of that are essential to the unique feel of WoT.

A modern style game would give you the opportunity to explore a lot of things that haven't been explored in detail by the novels--all the stuff BEFORE the breaking of the world. maybe your group is part of the army of Aes Sedai Lew Therin led to imprison the dark one, and then they have to play out dealing with the taint...

Lots of possibilities, IMHO.

Good luck!

If I find the motivation and time, I would probably do it myself. Just give me a note if you actually do it and make it available online.

Usually translating from a foreign language in your mother tongue is easier than the other way around, so even your rusty German might be sufficient. :)

Alternatives

Althogough not based on d20 Modern, other options include;

Stargate SG-1 (if your players are into the series)
Spycraft (if they're into espionage)
Call of Cthulhu (if they're into modern horror)

Another option could be Darwin's World, but that's based on d20 Modern and if you need that book you may just as well play that instead. (Not knocking Darwin's World in any way. I bought 1st ed and thought it was great!)

You could even look at some of the earlier Polyhedron d20 mini-games.

Rather than WoT, pit them Against the Shadow.

In, the world of Midnight (Ennies 2003 Winner: Best Campaign Setting)

Nuff said.

This was posted once and (maybe?) overlooked. It's a wonderful campaign world, at once both familiar and yet hautingly different. It's a somewhat Tolkienesque fantasy setting, but with a very interesting dark twist that makes it different enough to be uber-kewl.

Or you could go really wackky, drop a few tabs of acid and run Testament: Fear and Loathing in the Biblical Era.
