d20Engine: Core Mechanic

I think the more generic and descriptive RPGEngine is a good choice, personally. I don't really care what the thing is named, though.

I read the W3C guide for OWL as well. I'd like to find something that delves deeper. Off to amazon.com I guess...

I've started in the spell model. I thought it would be simple, but if you wish to be descriptive...

I'm attaching the beginning of the model. I'm still figuring things out, and some things need adjusting. For example, some generic game concepts should probably be imported from a separate ontology.

If you wish to view it, use Protégé 3.1 beta, with the OWL plugin.

Once I get the model completely done, then I can import all of the spells in the database. And then move on to the other models.

Hmm. Well, as all first quick and dirty drafts in unfamiliar territory, this one has to go down the drain. I'll leave it up anyway in case you want to play with it.

I've just discovered an ISO 19103 ontology, which is great: they have the basics laid out for units of time and space (great for spells and other things) and it's a good example for me to follow and figure things out. It also has provisions for records and data dictionaries, a definite plus to manage all the objects that will be in there.

And I've looked at SWRL, and it seems it's a rather complete rule language with conditionals and arithmetic. So I still believe that a custom rule language is not the way to go (IMVHO of course).

I am not married to the name "RPGEngine" either. We can leave that as an open point for the time being and revisit it after we've laid more of the groundwork.

andargor - Drop by the Wiki (see my sig) where we've got a few conversations going about how to approach this. We're keeping a seat warm for you. It would be great if you'd post some info about SWRL and ISO 19103. Both sound like they have potential. And a replacable system of measures might be appreciated by the folks who use the metric system in their daily lives.

Thread Ressurrection!!!

Whatever happened to this?

The wiki link is dead.

Is there any left over files ( especially if there are OWL ontologies out there ) that I can grab? I've been trying to kickstart myself into OWL and thought to marry it to my hobby so as to make it easier to grasp.

Anything you have, whether half-( or even quarter- )baked, would be good.

Has it been 2 years already? How time flies.

Like most hobby projects, they don't get finished. :D Seriously, I guess we each had our own distractions since then.

I've meager, bumbling attempts here:

http://www.andargor.com/files/d20-ontology2.zip

(they are different approaches, if I recall)

I'm an amateur, and realize that I would need some formal training on the matter since it is hard to know which end to start with. Trying not to think in programming terms, but to truly define the game concepts, is the hardest part.

I still believe that ontologies would be key to describing an exception-based game system like D&D. It would make generating code for programming purposes so much easier.
