Some folks like me don't really "count" the pips. I look and see the pips and it just translates to the number. Rolling sneak attack dice or the 4d6 for stats goes more quickly for me with the pips and actual counting happens with the numbers.

We're just wired differently. :)
I wasn't saying you count pips. But When someone rolls say, 10 numbered dice, I can immediatly after the roll see four 4s, three 3s etc.

Pipped dice, I don't have to count the pips, but I do have to look at each die individually. I won't immediatly see how many 4s were rolled, hence not allowing for multiplication and instead having to add up.

See thats the difference that he's talking about.

With me, when I roll dice with pips, they sort of "flow together" faster for me... Whereas with numbers I start actually doing math. Which is much slower, as I suck at math.

In my day we had to carve our dice out of wood because the dice in the OD&D white box were so cheap the edges would round off quite quickly. And we liked it!

OMG! that brings back some fond memories of one of my buddies who save the D20 from that set and it was so rounded that most of the time he rolled it it would end up off the table and on the floor. It would just roll and roll...

Old fogie flashback over, back to your usual programming.
