Over at DaemonEye Publishing we are setting aside 10% of the gross of our future products in order to gain right-to-use for original artwork. Why am I posting this here? Because this applies to the artwork IN each PDF we will be making! This 10% will be divided between the artists whos artwork was used, proportional to the number of pieces they have in the product! Color pieces count as two each, the cover counts as two, and a color cover would count as four. See our company web-page for more details. DaemonEye Publishing

This probably belongs in another forum, but I've found that for PDF publication where you are paying by royalties instead of up front, a higher payout provides for better art. We currently spend about 20% to 25% of our gross sales on art. (For example, we pay $1.56 per copy sold to the artist for Crimson Contracts - The Assassin's Manifesto).

You also have a LOT higher art density than me. Usually about three to four times the amount I like to use. So my per-piece ratio will actually be GREATER than yours, on average.

That is awesome indeed. The better we (the various e-publishing companies) can pay our artists and writers, the better off the e-publishing RPG industry will be.

We aim for about 1 piece of art per 7 pages of content in a PDF release, at one piece per 24 pages, that is indeed a significant increase in pay scale.

I'm shooting for a 1-in-10 pages count, but will settle for 1-in 20 or so. I tend to focus more on the "crunchy bits", and use art to fill in dead-space at the end of sections, as well as PrC portraits.

In Lands of Molokai, I want to get a few atmosphere pieces, and the portraits, as well as the maps. This will probably take the total art count above the 1-in-20 amount, with most of it situated in the PrC and Geography sections.

I already got somebody doing cartography, so now I'm looking for atmosphere and PrC portrait artists.

If the density goes above what we've projected, we've been tossing around the idea of putting in a little something extra for the artists, but it really depends on sales the first month.
