D&D 5E Daggers, Knives, and Darts...... Are there no Knives in 5E....?!?!?!

A Knife is a dagger that does Slashing damage instead of Piercing.

It also (historically) does 1d3 damage.

Let's not be so cruel and just call a Slashing dagger a "knife".

The real issue here, that nobody seems to be getting, is that knives surely must exist in the world--they're just so fabulously rare that they're never sold by anyone, anywhere.

Or, in other words...money can't buy knives!

"You call that a knife? This is a knife."

"That's not a knife. That's a spoon!"

"All right, you win. I see you've played knifey-spoony before."

Knives do exist in 5e, you just have to read the right bits of the PHB.

Sages and Urchins have small knives. They know where to get them but it's a closely-guarded secret and no, you can't have one.

Also, some Warlocks and Wizards have Scholar's Packs that include small knives but they wouldn't dream of using them to attack with. Why use something a absurdly mundane as a knife? Perish the thought. What do you think cantrips are for? Peeling oranges?

And then there's Trinket #32 ...

Knives in 5e are called Daggers.
Daggers in 5e are called Shortswords.
Swords in 5e are called Rapiers.
Bastard Swords in 5e are called Longswords.
Two-handed swords in 5e are called Greatswords.

Hope that helps. :D

I was going to get all indignant, then Wikipedia proved S'mon right (if you accept wiki as a definitive source).

I miss my 1d10/2d8 sword though... *snif*
