Dark Sun

Lokar

First Post
So I have a friend who has a friend who is looking to put together a group. I asked him if there was any seting he was specifically wanting to look into. He said something about certainly not FR (that made me giggle a little :) ) Then mentioned something about wishing there was a 3.5 conversion of Dark Sun. I thought I remembered seeing something posted around here about one somewhere. So help me out!

Both are awesome, by the way. Athas.org is a very faithful conversion of 2e rules, but I must say I like the Dragon version of it myself. The monsters from Athas.org are AWESOME, though. Really, both sources are excellent.

Dragon #319 has about 25 pages of rules and background information on Dark Sun. Also, Dragon #315 has rules for defiler magic, which is a significant aspect of the setting.

I dunno; personally, I found the Dungeon/Dragon issues that presented DS somewhat lacking, especially since (IMHO) they changed some fundamental aspects of the game. (They were alos limited by space constraints, presumably, as well.)

I'd highly recommend Athas.org, whose contributors been working tirelessly for many years to ensure that the DS that we loved from 2nd Edition makes it's way to the 3.x world. :)

Great! Thanks folks! The friend of a friend really appreciated the help! (Now maybe He'll start a group and I can force him to let me join :-p)

I Never played in Dark Sun even in my 2e days but the setting sounds interesting!

As mentioned above, you'll find rules for defiling in Dragon #315 and a general conversion in Dragon #319 (with accompanying "DM's Guide" and monsters in Dungeon #110 and #111). Dragon #339 has an epic prestige class for Athasian dragons and Dragon #351 has an article with a collection of Athasian bits and pieces (including a different, very simple take on defiling).

Plus, of course, there's athas.org :D.

Thankyou for this., Wik :). I was one of the lead designers on the monster books, so it's really great to hear that they're still appreciated.

Well done. I tap into the Terrors and Deadlands monster books regularly. Darksun was my first campaign I ever ran and I have a special spot for it in my heart. I still wish more was released on it.

and that mu computer could handle some of those files.... oye... I need to get DSL or something. Modem with 1960's phone lines suck for downloading files / images.

Really? I thought that the Dungeon/Dragon Conversion helped FIX some of the problems that happened in the later "revised" Dark Sun - a greening process, most of the sorcerer kings dying (that's kind of lame), Avangions.... the Dragon remake helped the setting become brutal once more.

Granted, it has it's faults - Paladins were included in the class lists, there was no real templar conversion (although the idea of templars just being clerics with domains is kind of neat), inclusion of the new races, and so on. All that being said, I think it was pretty good work.

Well, you did great. I used it a lot in my 3e DS Game. What made it even cooler was the fact that the DS monster compendiums are the only real DS Products I don't own (I got into DS just as the line was ending, so I wasn't able to find them... I got all my Dark Sun products used through some scavenging of the local used bookstores - the only DS books I don't own are the Monster books, The Ivory Triangle, and Thri-Kreen of Athas).

So, I got a chance to know what a lot of the iconic DS monsters were because of books like Terrors, and the conversions found in Dungeon Magazine. Still use them, from time to time.
