Yes, I thought it ripped Groo too. I like the uncle.

I think that most of the "Groo-ness" is simply due to the fact that it's a comedy about a dumb barbarian. In fact, when you think about it, it's really anti-Groo. The thrust of Dave is that he doesn't act like a barbarian, while Groo is the stereotypical barbarian. In any given situation, Groo will pull out his sword and try to kill something. Dave will scream and run away. Plus, Dave's family gives his show the type of supporting cast that Groo never really had (oh, there were returning character, but, aside from his dog, they were just occassional guest stars).

That said, I think Dave is a pretty good show. It has a very Rocky & Bullwinkle style of humor. And how can you not like a show with a magic horse that looks like a My Pretty Pony but talks like Christopher Walken? I love his monologue about the terrible thoughts one has when all alone ("I had that dream again. The one where I do terrible things to penguins with a croquet mallet"). :)

I thought it was okay. But, admitedly, it's aimed at a younger audience. I can really see my younger cousins enjoying it though. For me, it's a passing smile.
