DCC RPG BETA, June 8th

...as it says on the tine. Joseph Goodman's fairly unique take on Appendix N adventuring will be available in BET form on the 8th Of June from Goodman Games site.

I, for one, am rather excited. It looks pretty different than your normal faire. Those that don't like high PC death counts (the character funnel idea, start with 3 PCs each and at the end of the first adventure hopefully there will be enough left for one PC per player...) and randomness (using d3, d14 etc dice!) probably not your thing, but it is free :)

But of you fancy something different and rather chaotically fun, have a look

Yeah, I watched Joe run this at Gary Con at the end of March. Everyone looked to be having a lot of fun. I'll definitely give this a read through, then I'll know if I will give it a run.

Download seemed to stall out on me, but a copy-and-paste of the URL and going there again brought it down quickly. (I was download 1348 at 8am ET, so it's off to a good start!) Just a quick scan shows lots of Roslof art (big plus) and a quick glance at the character sheet shows a character you can play off a 3x5 index card (definitely good for a change of pace). I'll start reading this evening.

One thing that's not working is the Wizard / Elf class.

At 1st level a wizard determines 4 spells that he knows, representing years of study and practice.

You have a 0-level character that goes on an adventure. Great, they survive and become a 1st level Wizard. Is the gap between 0 level and the first adventure suppose to be years? Did that farmer study magic with his hen (or randomly determined farm animals) for years before going on his 0 level adventure? Perhaps the farmer's hen is his patron!

Of course, this is nothing that a clever Judge couldn't resolve. Perhaps the character's patron allowed them to study in some extraplaner space where time doesn't move at the same rate. The wizard could come back years older then his other 0 level adventurerers.

I do love the B/W artwork! I also like how many of them are reminiscent of some classic old pieces. My fav is probably the starter piece for the magic section.
The art makes the game. I haven't read the rules, but that art is what makes me all warm and fuzzy... nostalgia is AWESOME! Now I want to convert my game... again!

Tell them. That sounds like something that needs to be addressed, in some fashion, before this goes to print.

I doubt this will ever be my primary game, but I definitely want to check it out for inspirational/nostalgic reading purposes, though.

on the leap to adventurer...the 0 level charecter approach is a potentially fun, but also very particular one. I except to see alternate char gen (and it would fairly easy to do ones self).

If you do take this approach, the potential wizard is going to have a high int, and hence some potential. (And the elf, will already be an elf...). You can probably pre identify them, and just say they were studying magic.

Overall, a lot going on. I would like to play at a con or game day, but otherwise I see this as more grist for the idea mill...and I have had some already.
