DDI - 8000 subscribers and counting - When will it stop?

Huh, I just checked over there, and indeed without any action on my part, I'm automatically in the D&D Insider group.

Whatever the final number is you should multiply that by a 2 to 6, to account for the people that are in DDI and not on those boards… thus whatever the number is it is nearly 100% irrelevant other than to represent a bare minimum number.

Something else I think people really need to understand is D&D is not expected to be a huge money maker. As long as it is making some money and growing, even if slightly, it will be considered a success. As long as they can get revenue from the license in books, movies and video games it will be doing well.

Also the dependability of the income is going to be a great windfall for them. It might even be the most important part. It will allow them to make long range plans like they have never been able before.

I must admit I expected a lot more than 8000. 8000 is likely less than 1% of the 4E audience.

Remember though that this is the number of people who are both currently signed up for DDi and have recently gone to the wizard's forums. The number of forum posters is going to be a small portion of the DDi subscribers.

I wonder if the switch made on the WotC site now makes someone having a DDI account automatically someone having an account at all? This may be one of the reasons for the recent consolidation. Maybe someone here with a DDI account who didn't previously have a WotC forum account can see if they have that access automatically?

Has anyone answered the question of whether you stay in the group or are ejected when you're subscription runs out? If all it does is keep tallying regardless of a person's change in status then this number is totally useless, not even accurate as a snapshot and is probably much lower for total active subscribers at any given point than the final number will show.

Contrary to what many believe I think, especially right now since you can download everything, the sub for a month wait 3 to 4 months and sub for a month again model is being used by quite a few people. It's all IMO of course.

The count of the members of the DDI group is, as mentoned above, people who have subscribed to DDI and have also activated a WotC community account. I have also, in chats with CM, been told that the number of members in the group is a small fraction of the total number of subscribers.

Even if the 8000 number was accurate, that seems like a good amount of extra revenue coming in, especially when a lot of people pay for a year up front (or does it only bill monthly?).

But I guess you then have to factor in, how many DDI subscribers are using it exclusively, and no longer buying any (or as many) books? Does the DDI revenue make up for/exceed the lost revenue from book sales?
