So. I like the halflings. Like, really, really like them. I even felt like part of the 65.2% the next week when the halfling poll results came in. :uhoh: Reading this thread, I now suddenly feel that liking them is not cool.

I personally don't mind an overall cartoony art style on a game aimed at kids.

As for silly proportions, I'm a little biased here. I've read some of my native folklore on our native demihumans for research purposes, and disproportionate body parts seem to be the norm so I am not bothered by it showing up here.

So yeah. I like them. That is all. ;)

D&D needs to be distinctly D&D. It needs to SET the trends, not follow them.

:-SB-)

A successful product needs to do both. Popular trends are popular for a reason, popular products get purchased in higher volumes. Settings trends is nice, but few products can do this just out of thin air. Like most products in the fantasy genre, D&D needs to be able to capitalize on what is popular, as well as take control of it and run with it.

I must be missing what the big deal is. These were done several months ago and they've already said things like proportions (feet legs and such )would change, as it was just the style they were going with at the time.

They've also said for final art in the rule-books they want it to be more realistic.

Needs more Wayne Reynolds.

"At an end Reynold's rule is, and not short enough it was..." - Yoda on 5e artwork

I honestly don't hate his artwork. It's just so stylized and so overexposed between Pathfinder and 4e, I really need a completely new approach to cleanse my palate. I'm still lamenting the lack of MtG artists involved, their bullpen largely the premiere fantasy artists of our day, but maybe that will come in time.

I don't believe this is for the core books, it's concept art for the Forgotten Realms. However, I don't like it for core or for FR.

The Forgotten Realms will be the core setting. This could mean that the Forgotten Realms gods will be mentioned in the core books for example.
