Deadlands d20 In-Character (Turn 1)

"Well now, the Sheriff is a taken his dinner at home right now. But I'm on duty iffin' I can be of servers to ya. Name's Deputy Ben Miller."

Deputy Miller doesn't get up out of his chair, and seems to be fairly relaxed.

Sizing him up Dustin, he might be a big as you so your not sure if you could take him in a fist fight, but his hands aren’t anywhere near his pistol right now

Scowling at the Deputy Running Wolf, the man appears to be fairly relaxed but then a shiver runs up your spine and you are sure that this is all an act. The Deputy is tense as all hell, but is doing a pretty good job of hiding it. If you didn't know better you would think he was a mountain loin hiding in the bushes, hungry as hell and getting ready to jump onto an unsuspecting deer

Felix, you have been hanging back, watching out for anything out of the ordinary…

Running Wolf begins to run her hand down her tomahawk. She will wait for the white men to speak to him before she tries her way.

Felix glances at Running Wolf. I wonder what she plans on doing with that nasty looking tool. Felix looks both ways up the street and clears his throat, stepping forward.

Well, like my friend here said, we really have business with the Sherrif. You don't mind if we waits around a spell, do yah? It certainly is a fine town you've got here. Seems downright law and orderly. Probably the work of fine lawmen such as yerself of course.

Without waiting for an invite, Felix steps up onto the stoop, leaning against a pole. His cards appear in his hand, shuffling through the air back and forth in a blur.

Yah know, this town actually reminds me of a town I once wondered through down in the Disputed Territories. Hell, they had one of the finest law and orderly towns I ever done saw. Course that was jist on the surface. There was some bad juju in that place. Just a feeling yah know? 'Twas said that some mighty bad evil lived in the town, slowly suckin' out its soul. Course, like my Granny Poe always said, she said, "Felix, yah damn fool boy, evil be livin' in da darndest places."

Jackson looks out wistfully towards the westering sun.

Course, like I said Deputy, this town, this town seems mighty law and orderly. My compliments to you'n your fellow lawmen.

He flicks a card out of the deck, spinning it over his fingers and catches it with the other hand between his thumb and forefinger. An Ace of Spades is revealed. Jackson palms the card and looks up, smiling at the Deputy.

at the Sheriff's office...

Still sitting in his chair, Deputy Miller listens to Felix without comments, nodding here and there. He seems to think for a minute and then says "Yea I guess ya can all wait here for the Sheriff if ya please. I could use the company as this is a right boring town. Can I get any of ya some coffee? Got a fresh pot on the stove…"

With that he stands up and heads into the Sheriff Office. Me moves over towards a iron stove and pulls some mugs off and starts filling them with hot black coffee that you can smell from outside the office (if you don't go in). "Come on in out of the sun there folks, and take a load off. You might as well wait in here instead of out in the dust. I'd expect the Sheriff to be back in 10 or 20 minutes."

Opps one more thing...

You all also notice that there is a train pulling into town, as the Sheriff's office is right on the rail line. You almost all hear the moan of ghost rocks and the strange engine of the Iron Dragon pulls just past the office...

Running Wolf will enter, albeit reluctantly. Thoughts of entering a mountain lions' den go through her mind... Then she remembers she is a wolf herself - with a couple of cubs at her back.

OOC: Running Wolf will enter and look around intently. Is there anyone in any cells that is visible? I also scowl at his offer of coffee, but remain quiet unless asked a direct question. I will glare at the wolf cubs with me, hoping they ask the right questions to reveal the Deputy's black heart.

Wow, all this glaring and scowling sure does take it out of a girl.

Addendum: Running Wolf will also sneer at the incoming train.

on the Iron Dragon train, pulling into town...

The train is running a little late as it finally pulls into Billings.

"Billings Montana folks, last stop, last stop, everyone get yer bags please, this is the last stop of the Iron Dragon Rail-lines" yells the railcar attendee.

Thomas was sleeping lightly when he was awoken by the attendees yelling. Looking out into the early evening you see that you have arrived at least to the town where Pastor Duncan O'Donnell asked you to come. It is a hot dry and the sun is slowing approaching the horizon. The other passengers are grabbing there luggage and heading out...

Dustin enters the room warily, looking about his surroundings carefully. He runs a hand across his cheek, and mumbles in the negative when the deputy offers him some coffee.

"Ten or twenty minutes? We kin wait ten or twenty minutes." he says, moving to lean against the wall. His eyes don't leave the deputy.

"How long you bin a deputy, if you don't mind my askin'?"

He folds his arms across his chest, balled fists under his armpits. Damn I'm feelin' jumpy, but I don't know why. He ain't that big, I've tangled with badder'n him. While he waits for the deputy's reply, he taps his boot against the floor impatiently.

in the Sheriff's office

Felix, Dustin and Running Wolf enter into the Sheriff's office and look around. The office is clean and orderly and nothing really stands out as odd. There are four desks set up inside, with a large iron stove in one corner, and a rifle case that has five Winchesters chained up in it. One door leaves to back room that is obviously the jail as you can see barred off cells.

Looking at Felix and Dustin, Deputy Miller says "Well now I been a deputy here for four years now. As for trouble, well not much ever happens, except for drunks and something them Chinamen stir up trouble. We an't never had no trouble with the Railwars but there have been raids and attacks to the west of town that we have been called in on. Iffin' you ask me it be this Kang fellows fault. He just a little to uppity for my taste… But as for anything weird like that well now maybe you been reading to many of them eastern dime store novels. They always tell tall tales of stuff out west, but ya ever see one of them Tin Horns ever so much as work an honest day much less no what it be like out here"

Deputy Miller also seems amused by your card tricks Felix but makes no comments about them, just watching and smiling.

Running Wolf you can look back into the Jailhouse and see one figure in one of the cells; seems to be sleeping with their back turned towards you.

Deputy Miller hands out coffee to Dustin and Felix, nothing the scowl on Running Wolf's face he just grins and say "Sorry there little lady, coffee is all I got" to which his smile grows even wider

Running Wolf the creepy feeling that you get from this guy is only growing. Just for a second his smile seem to be just a little to wide… and just a little to… something… not lustful, but eerie and disturbing all the same.

Running Wolf will walk to an opposite wall and sit on her haunches, pulling out her bow and setting it against the wall. She will move slowly and deliberately, trying to be unthreatening. More as if she's prepared for a long wait. All the while, she will be surreptitiously keeping an eye on the Deputy.

If there is a lull in the conversation, she will nod her head at the sleeping prisoner.

"In my tribe, those who break the laws are beaten in front of their family. This is enough to stop them from doing what it is they did. What did that one do?"

Dustin's eyes narrow as he continues to examine the "deputy". His jaw clenches and a vein appears in his forehead as he stands there, looking like he's about to explode. But he says nothing for a spell, ignoring the proffered cup of coffee.

"Four years, Deputy Miller? And you never been around the church in all that time?" Strangely, this is said more as a statement than a question. At Running Wolf's words, he looks over at the prisoner, but only for a moment. Then his attention is fully on Miller again.
Don't know what this guy's up ta, but somethin' ain't sitting right about this at all... He didn't realize it was possible, but he's gone even more tense as he awaits the answer. He wants to hear Miller's response. But he's dreading it. Because if the man answers wrong, something bad is going to go down.
