D&D 5E Dealing with a Heavily Armored Paladin?

He umm, can't. It's kinda cursed. (He hasn't choosen to dispel the curse yet because I tied +1 of the +2 into it. Lose the curse, lose the +1.)

Still might be fun to stick him in those situations though :D

*sigh*

I hate seeing posts like this. There isn't any build (outside of super high level Wizards that break the game) that can't be overcome without a modicrum amount of creativity. Off the top of my head:

1. Heat Metal. Doesn't care about AC, in fact in punishes it. Have some Fire Mephits flying around that he can't hit as they cast the spell and dart away.

2. Phantasmal Force. Int save, which means at best the initial save is +3/4. After he fails that save, it becomes an Int check, which means no bonus from his aura. From a sufficiently high level caster, it will be almost impossible to make. Get creative with your illusions and watch him whimper.

3. Illusions of any kind. His Int (Investigation) will be garbage. So create the image of the BBEG, Paladin charges in swinging and blows his big smites. After his turn, describe that his blade cuts through the creature as if it wasn't there. Tada, he blew a bunch of resources on nothing vs the cost of a level 1-2 Illusion spell.

4. Stop giving them so damn many long rests. Biggest problem DMs make is handing out long rests like candy. Stop it. Resources attrition is the simplests and most effective way of decreasing the firepower of a class like a Paladin while allowing other classes (Monk, Rogue, Warlock, etc) to still shine.

3. MIND FLAYERS and INTELLECT DEVOURERS. Easily the most fun enemies to throw at Paladins who think they're hot stuff.

It sounds like the problem is the +2 Plate armor that he probably shouldn't have. Heat metal would wreck him. Rust monster would have him crying.

How about an encounter in/around/under water?

Monster selection or scaling the monster they encounter

Adult Dragon like a White Dragon 22 DC con breath weapon save even with max con +5 and +5 he needs a 12 roll to be successful scale the monsters is also fun way to cause major damage just be careful you can kill the group

Mainly because it started getting boring during such a horde event. Enough weren't hitting him that the horde started ignoring him, and then he got bored because they were ignoring him.

I'll try more precise monsters, but bounded accuracy makes that hard. Thankfully dexterity is one of his worst saving throws, so I'll try throwing more foes with 'dodge-damage' effects.

Fireball the sucker.

Half damage on the save for the win.

TheEvilDM already covered my position on this; there is nothing to stop, let your player's characters be actually good at the things they are meant (and supported by powerful magic item) to be good at.

But there is one thought that was expressed a couple of times I wanted to touch on:
Rust monster would have him crying.
Rust monsters don't corrode magic items in 5th edition.

I gave the party a ring of protection +1 that I thought would go to the mage or thief who have an AC around 14, but the party gave it to the fighter who already had a 20 AC. I may give +1 leather or such but I do not plan on magic plate mail unless is is magic without having +1 or such.

what did you expect? They did the right decision. AC boosts work bests on already high AC characters. On AC 14, +1 is a minor buff, on AC 20 it's huge.

Aye. I love it when a PC tanks himself up. It's a blast for me to throw hordes at him, or a big brute. Just anything to test that tank's protection. And I figure the more I throw at him that fails to hurt, the more fun the player is having because he's being extra successful.

So, instead of having the foes move on to squishier targets try all the crazy things you can think of to get through the paladin's defenses. And remember: They don't have to work to be fun.
