Death and XP

If a PC dies during an adventure (let's say the last encounter of the evening for simplicity) and is brought back to life shortly thereafter do they get the XP earned during that session before or after applying the "death penalty" of level loss?

The DMG says to give XP for THAT encounter (the one in which the character dies) to the PC after applying the level loss. That said, should the PC get the XP for all encounters before the death first, then apply the penalty, then give the XP for the final encounter?

I'm confused.

Fairly good question, it's not explicitly laid out so ultimately it's up to the DM to interpret. For simplicity's sake, I would be in favor of just keeping whatever the next block of XP that would be awarded "in escrow", and give it back to the PC after raising.

Hmm, I'd give all unawarded xp after the pc was raised. Some groups give out xp as they go; in that case, the unawarded xp would prolly only be for that one encounter.
