Death for all my friends!

How do dms deal with players who fight with each other. Our party recently had some turbulence and almost went the way of the dodo. In the past their have been character duels and fights, nobody has ever been killed. I was wondering if this has happend in your group how was it handeld?

If they persist on the in fighting, then let it happen.
When they all die, then have them make new characters.

Have the characters hear about the stupid group of adventurers that fought amongst themselves and died fighting each other.

Use it as a moral story that the parents tell their children. Or a captain to his guards.

Whenever some of my players try something like that, somehow something happens to distract them (the orcs attack, an important NPC appears, whatever).

I let them duke it out..any party conflict is solved BY the party themselves. I as the DM sit back and watch. Whomever dies dies, and they have to live with the results of that, not everyone always gets along with people..

The only problem is, unless the players are very mature, they'll be angry at who ever attacked and/or killed them.

Face it, your character is an extention of yourself, and having it killed by your friend (and not a monster) can hurt feelings.

Yeah, DMs have this problem all the time, killing characters all the time.. <ducks incoming objects>

Chris

This almost happened in our group once so the DM seeing this coming split up the party for a couple of playing sessions, and when the party got back together the conflict had died down a lot.

I have been playing in a long running campaign in which party conflict, or at least the possibility of it, is very much encouraged by the DM. The party is divided, and we are very often thrown into scenarios that might provoke one side to attack the other. Interestingly enough, it is the "good" characters that are always the ones more likely to threaten an attack, and the "evil" characters that are always playing the peacemaker.

Most of the parties get along splendidly, or well enough at least. But killing of characters does happen from time to time. It has been a long time since it has been a knife in the back, but that has happened too . . . .

And through it all, we have remained the best of friends.

Dareoon,

My players are free to role-play their characters any way they see fit… but like the saying goes: Your right to swing your fist stops at the end of my nose.

Explain to them that the situation has become intolerable. It would be unfortunate if you had to make a house rule to solve the problem, but if the players cannot handle themselves in a mature and responsible manner then they leave you with few options.

Tell the group that any player who loses a PC to another PC is free to make a new character if they choose, but they cannot bring that character back. The character is permanently dead.

As for any PC that intentionally kills another PC… no penalties will be handed out, but should that character die – that’s it. That player cannot bring that character back, and cannot make a new character – effectively removing them from the group.

That way there is no “winner” even if the fight is mutual.

Actions have consequences even when gaming amongst friends. And nothing can ruin a game session faster than watching two players argue (in character) over something inconsequential. Especially if the tension is being taken away from the game.

Of course, you will have to watch out for the occasional rules-lawyer. Some player might have the bright idea to instigate a fight with another PC and take the fall, then draw up a new character. They might wait and (kak) kill that character – thus eliminating any chance of the player coming back.

In that instance, I’d boot the instigator.

To be honest, I let it happen if it is going to happen, as long as it is truly between those particular characters. If it becomes a regular thing with certain players, I tend to weed them out from future games because they aren't playing characters any longer. When they play each and every character as a PC-Blood thirsty killer, I just stop inviting them to play.
