Death in 4e

I always wonder about stories like these. In my experience, smart and cautious play from one PoV often looks a lot like leaving other characters in the lurch from another.

To put things another way, a group implementing a bold plan together can do well, sometimes better than group trying to play it safe. So it's like being aggressive is always an inherently inferior choice. But a group where a few people act aggressively while everyone else tries to minimize personal risk is going to leave the aggressive people screwed over and over.

been there, done that (both sides of the coin).

have had (2) characters kick the bucket in 4E.

1) Got sucked into an instakill (4e still has 'em)
2) Failed 3 death saves (party out of heals, dire straits)

but on the other hand, 4e *feels* more forgiving to my risky play...

I would say 4E looks to be like a game set on (Easy) Difficulty Level

I'm finding that this isn't true. My party has now hit 7th level, just barely, so I've only played through 6th level. We are going through the Pyramid of Shadows. Let me just say this is a rather tough module.

As you level it seems like the monsters hit far easier and have attacks that are dangerous. We are having to rest every 3 or 4 encounters like intended. And there are some situations in Pyramid of Shadows that are downright nasty.

I'm beginning to think that just like previous editions, the lower levels are deceptively easy. Once you get past a certain point if you haven't learned how to use good teamwork and maximize your abilities, you are in for a rough ride.

Folks here know I'm not a Pro-4E guy and one of my complaints was the game was too easy, but I have to take that back now. We are getting pushed to the wire as far as survival. I have to give props to the module designer for Pyramid of Shadows so far. He created some appropriately tough encounters that push a good party to the wall.

These solos and elites are getting downright nasty. And monster ACs have been so high that we're lucky to hit 30% of the time. It's been much tougher than I expected it would be.

So though I think at low level 4E might be "easy mode"., at higher levels it seems to increase in difficulty. I'm not sure how long this will maintain, but right now we're having a pretty rough time.

I can't remember the last time I had a 10 round fight against a monster. But we had a knockdown, dragout 10 round "blow your dailies" fight with a single vicious monster that almost killed us. Thank the gods for Stand the Fallen or a few of us would have went down.
