I looked it over and the rules are like "d20 Lite." I would rather just take my Tolkien Companion and my D&D core books and run a Middle Earth game that way.

I had a look at my friends copy and it very much reads as a D6 version of D20 there are many similarities, which is cool as I am rather fond of the D20 system.

The book is also beautiful, great cover, great art, and excellent borders, not too cramped and nicely bound.

The book is beautiful, the rules are well thought-out, and fairly simple if you can find them.

The organization is terrible, however :-( You can't just sit down and make a character, because many rules are hidden in the details :-( No one table tells you where to get all of your skills from, for example.

So they kept that part from the Rolemaster rules. Thats nice to know.

I looked at it and i actually hated the layout art decisions.

it just seemed to much like an add for the movies. there's so much amazing art out there about the LOTR that for them to use mostly movie picts, IMHO, just reeked of commercialim. I understand they want to sell more books, but jeeze, why not just put the book in a happy meal?

I'm going to post a review of it in the near future (Matt Colville of Decipher sent a copy to me to review), so hang on a bit if you want to know what I think (not that you do, necessarily...). I wanted to run a couple sessions before I posted a review, but I don't think that's going to happen. So far, I'm impressed with the book. Very handsome. I would have liked some art other than movie photos, and an introductory adventure. Still, the book overall seems very solid rules-wise, and the lengths the writers went to in capturing the essence of the Lord of the Rings - the books - is commendable.

They wanted to be able to use pics from the movie for marketing purposes. With a licensing agreement like that in place, would it make sense to go and spend MORE money on other images?

There have been quite a few reviews of it on rpg.net. If you want to read them, go to http://www.rpg.net/news+reviews/reviews.html and enter "Lord of the Rings Roleplaying" into the search function.
