I, on the other hand, see the artwork from a deck of many things as unlimited in scope and potential. The major limiting factor being where and when the deck was made. Oriental art. Why not? Cave drawings. Even this is possible. Magical 3-d images that leap off the medium and come to life to make their effects happen? Great idea!

amaril: Not to sound rude, but: you should have entered this contest with your vision of what a deck should look like; not say the people who did enter didn't fulfill your vision of what it should be. The vote here is to determine which of the one's who did enter is most liked. If you like none of them, so be it; but that does not make their entries invalid. Personally, I found something I liked in each and every deck and would not hesitate to use any of them in game. You are free to stick with your tarot deck if you wish.

What is wrong with it? Do you think it's not art??? Not like someone from Medival times would know what computer art is, they'd just think it was very reaalistic art.
I can do lots of styles but with raising a 6 year old by myself, traditional art takes more time than i have to do something for fun or free. It still takes lots of talent can you guess how much of those are hand drawn and touched up in photoshop? It is something you can do, walk away from and come back and not have to worry about misplaced colors, dried out paint and getting back into the feel of the picture. Much more conviant given the circumstances.
Personally, I really don't like computer generated 3d modeling, but I agree that it is still art. We can discuss the hypothetical aspects of how varied a deck of many things might appear from one deck to another, how someone in medieval times wouldn't know what computer art looks like, but in my personal opinion, I just don't think these designs are fitting to my impression of a deck of many things.

I mean no offense to the artists who spent time and effort on this project; I was merely expressing an opinion. In fact, I even gave credit to the artistic value of the works in question before I gave my opinion. My opinion was just an expression of how I personally view a deck of many things. It was not intended to be any sort of attempt at dictating a definitive answer to how a deck should appear.

Firstly, I didn't even know there was a contest until I saw this thread. Secondly, I posted an opinion, which included an opinion of merit for the artistic quality of these entries. I only expressed an opinion of how I imagine a deck to appear, not of the quality of the work presented for the contest. I think some of the respondents to my post are confusing the two.

Again, just to clarify, I think the work is very good and very creative. It's just now how I picture a deck of many things.

Hey, the goal of this is to see the beautiful and cool art people have created. It's okay if it doesn't agree with how you see the Deck; that doesn't make it bad!

See I thought this said art work contest.

I looked at all of them and far as art goes DA beat them all hands down.

Art is subjective. Also, this isn't just about the art it is about the Deck of Many Things an item that people have used for 30 years and have a strong idea of what they believe it should look like. One has to remember these are mostly D&D fans voting on this and not artist. I myself haave little talent or schooling in the ways of art, so I might not have a professional eye; I know what I like.

Voted. Sialia is a personal friend of mine and I love her art, and DertyAngel's work is also excellent, but I actually voted for ToddSchumacher's because to me those best fit what I'd want to see as a player handout/game accessory (or maybe it was just the comic book fan in me that liked the comic book-style art).
