OK, a quick background:
Dieties in my world gain and lose power due to people believing they exist and/or worshipping them. So an evil wizard, armed with advanced Epic level magic, decided to become a god.
Evil wizard became powerful enough to dominate an entire continent, and became divine (a demi-god, but not quite a full god.) The last step for him to become a true god is to defeat a god in combat. He almost did so if his cohort didn't backstab him at a crucial moment. So he died.
Alas, he did have a backup plan. Using his powerful magic, he transplanted an entire city to a remote, reclusive section of my world, and surrounded the city with evil beasts and guards. The evil wizard then made them worship him by supplying them with food and shelter and said that he was 'good' and they should show their respect by worshipping him. After a few dire charm person spells, and starting a temple, the transplanted town made him their only god.
Because about ten thousand people still believed he was a God, his essence was able to survive his own death and give his followers divine power. His priests now look for a way to resurrect him, and have found 1/2 of the solution.
Enter the party, who has half of the solution via a major artifact.
The party will be told of the hidden town worshipping this Evil Wizard as a god, and will be sent to stop him once and for all. How can the party go about this?
My thoughts were that the brute force method would be to either A) destroy the town or B) convert the town over or defeat the evil beasts around town.
A is difficult because the people in the town aren't evil and it would be super-bad for the party's alignment. B would be a good idea, but how would they do that, and how would the bad guys stop them? Any brainstorming ideas would be awesome, since this will be introduced this week and played out next week...
