I just want to say thanks for asking quesiton#4. I now have a new character idea for the next time I get a chance to play. Oh yeah, ambi dex/two wepaon, shield expert, any other shield feat. Flip flopping on the sword to use, but it and the spiked defender shield. Oh Yeah. I'm thinking a fighter/rogue because I want to buckle some swash, with the tumbling and the jumping.

Yeah, I actually think that sword and shield (with Shield Expert from S&F) is the best way to go with a ranger. The shield helps to make up for the light armor, and you can still make two weapon attacks.

(Of course, this concept is done even better with one level of ranger and several levels of fighter so that you can take all the shield feats, but that's always been a weakness of the ranger class: any purely combat oriented concept is done better with fighter levels. Rangers work best if the campaign is not primarily combat oriented.)
