Defense Bonus

Per Swashbuckling Adventures by AEG p.2 Open Game Content Paragraph 4 the following material is OGL.

Unarmored Defense Proficiency (Beginner) [Fighter, General]
You have a general knack for protecting yourself when you are unarmored and your flesh is exposed to attack.
Benefits: Your base AC (normally a 10) is increased by a bonus determined by your level when you are unarmored. This bonus does not stack with any armor bonuses granted by armor. When wearing armor this bonus is not applied. The bonus is supplied below.

Level.....Bonus................Level.....Bonus
1.............+3......................11..........+6
2.............+3......................12..........+7
3.............+3......................13..........+7
4.............+4......................14..........+7
5.............+4......................15..........+8
6.............+4......................16..........+8
7.............+5......................17..........+8
8.............+5......................18..........+9
9.............+6......................19..........+9
10...........+6......................20..........+9
Special: This bonus is applied even when your character is caught flat-footed or is denied their DEX modifier to their AC. This bonus is an increase to the Character's Base AC and thus is not named.

Unarmored Defense Proficiency (Intermediate) [Fighter, General]
Your ability to defend yourself when unarmored has further improved.
Prerequisites: Unarmored Defense Proficiency (Beginner)
Benefits: The bonus to your character's AC granted by the beginner version of this feat is replaced with the following chart:

Level.....Bonus................Level.....Bonus
1.............+5......................11..........+9
2.............+6......................12..........+10
3.............+6......................13..........+10
4.............+6......................14..........+10
5.............+7......................15..........+11
6.............+7......................16..........+11
7.............+8......................17..........+12
8.............+8......................18..........+12
9.............+8......................19..........+12
10...........+9......................20..........+13
Special: This bonus is applied even when your character is caught flat-footed or is denied their DEX modifier to their AC. This bonus is an increase to the Character's Base AC and thus is not named.

Unarmored Defense Proficiency (Master) [Fighter, General]
You have mastered the ability when wearing no armor.
Prerequisites: Unarmored Defense Proficiency (Intermediate)
Benefits: The bonus to your character's AC granted by the intermediate version of this feat is replaced with the following chart:

Level.....Bonus................Level.....Bonus
1.............+7......................11..........+12
2.............+8......................12..........+13
3.............+8......................13..........+13
4.............+9......................14..........+14
5.............+9......................15..........+14
6.............+10....................16..........+15
7.............+10....................17..........+15
8.............+11....................18..........+16
9.............+11....................19..........+16
10...........+12....................20..........+17
Special: This bonus is applied even when your character is caught flat-footed or is denied their DEX modifier to their AC. This bonus is an increase to the Character's Base AC and thus is not named.

So there it is. As you can see it can be quite nice at 20th level Master, however this is only a 27AC, 31AC with 18 DEX, 32AC with Dodge. Thats not bad especially considering it is considered Base AC which cannot be lost and also effects "Touch" AC as well.

And remember ANY armor bonus negates this bonus AND eats up 3 feats.

The other major trade off is the lack of ability to wear Magical Armor. A 20th level Fighter with +5 Dwarven Mithril Full Plate and a +5 Large Shield has a 35AC with a 16 DEX and 36AC with Dodge, as well as being able to have yet another +10 in Enhancement Powers on the armor and shield.

Overall I think it is quite balanced.

Except when a 20th level monk with Dex 20 and Wis 20 (human) takes those same three feats. Total AC of 41 (flat-footed 36, touch 41). Think about it people.

Yeah. That would be pretty powerful. The Monk would have to spend three of his 7-8 feats in order to do it. Not that big of a sacrifice?

Well I think monks are rather silly in most campaigns anyway and largely don't play with them. It's also good to point out that his came from Swashbuckling. The feats are for a specific style of play. They shouldn't be stopped just because one power combo that is out of style is not balanced. ;)

That's why a large part of OA doesn't port well into standard D&D.

Here are some potential Defense Bonus progressions I am considering using:

Level, Good, Typical, Lousy
1 +3 +0 +0
2 +4 +1 +0
3 +4 +1 +1
4 +5 +2 +1
5 +5 +2 +1
6 +6 +3 +2
7 +6 +3 +2
8 +7 +4 +2
9 +7 +4 +3
10 +8 +5 +3
11 +8 +5 +3
12 +9 +6 +4
13 +9 +6 +4
14 +10 +7 +4
15 +10 +7 +5
16 +11 +8 +5
17 +11 +8 +5
18 +12 +9 +6
19 +12 +9 +6
20 +13 +10 +6

The good track goes to Rogues, Monks, and Barbarians.
(Replaces the monk's AC bonus based on level).

The lousy track goes to Sorcerers and Wizards.

Everyone else gets the typical.
